What's an MS0?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
An MS0 is what I was yesterday. Today I started med school :-/

But I have no problem with the term. Like others have stated here, I think its a useful term to distinguish on this board who is starting medical school next fall versus premeds who are still applying/haven't applied yet.

LifetimeDoc's new and improved, totally-revamped, easy-to-use key to year classifications of students involved in pursuing an MD or DO...

  • Pre-Med: student who wishes to goto medical school, and is working towards that goal.
  • MS0: medical student who hasn't started their first year. They've been accepted, but are just waiting for classes to start.
  • MS1: medical student in their first year. Sometimes referred to as "freshman year".
  • MS2: medical student in their second year.
  • MS3 or JMS: medical student in their third year.
  • MS4 or SMS: medical student in their forth year.
  • PGY1 or R1 or Intern: medical graduate resident in their first year
  • PGY2 or R2: medical graduate resident in their second year
  • PGY3 or R3: medical graduate resident in their third year

In some systems...
  • 1, 2, 3: medical graduate in that particular year
  • E1: medical graduate of emergency medicine in their second year
  • E2: medical graduate of emergency medicine in their third year
  • CA1: medical graduate of clinical anesthesiology in their second year
  • CA2: medical graduate of clinical anesthesiology in their third year

Well, not to be both anal and an ass, but only 15 (or so) of the EM residency programs use the PGY2-4 format (with a mandatory preliminary/transitional intern year). About as many use a PGY1-4 format, and the majority use a PGY1-3 format. In those cases E1=EM1=PGY1. 😳
