I'm a third year dental student at LSU, and as everyone knows the city is under water. It'll be months before we can safely enter the city and a very long time to restore it. I wonder what is going to happen for us? Are they going to open a temporary school in Baton Rouge, or will we have to transfer to other schools? Does anybody have any thoughts about this? I'm thinking about getting a job teaching, since the elementary and high schools are overburdoned. I don't know what to do.

The rumor around LSU-S Hospital is that your program just turned into a five year course.

So, are the people who are spreading that rumor saying that it'll still be New Orleans based, resuming after the rebuilding of the city? If so, that sucks. I think they should "pluck" the dental equipment out of the school and install it in some of the abandoned shopping centers in Baton Rouge. Of course, that's a biased opinion b/c I want to graduate in 2007.

There's a rumor here that they may request the LSU residents and medical students go to other LSU hospitals around the state to help. I'm not sure how realistic that is. However, I don't think dental students or preclinical medical students are going to be able to continue their training for now. Have you thought about transferring to Houston, San Antonio, or Dallas?

I would consider transferring if that's what it takes. If I relocate, I'd like to go to the west coast, but I won't be picky if I can save myself some time.

Today, I was talking to a clinic faculty here at Nova this afternoon, he feels that we (Nova Dental) should take some of your LSU 4th year seniors and let them complete their DMD degree here at Nova! Many faculty agreed or liked the idea.

I'm the Student Government Body President, I will look into this option and see how our students would feel about that. I know our clinic is full as it is and most of us 4th years are having trouble getting chairs, having more dental students may impeed our chances of graduating!

Nonetheless, I still believe it can be a great option for us to take in lets say 5 LSU 4th years....I'll look into this issue more.....

What about the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students? Any talk about taking them on as well? Also, how big is the LSU class?

The third year class is 61, the others are similar sizes.

I also think that taking on some students from LSU is an awesome idea. I'm also class president, so I'll bring this up with our dean the next time I meet with him.
Thanks to Gavin C and Yah-E for your efforts bringing these ideas up to your deans. I have no idea what is going through the minds of our administration. Maybe they are just worried about their own homes and loved ones. Our dean is the president of ADEA, so I wonder what he has brought up to them or plans to bring up. Any ADEA reps out there? Maybe you guys can bring this up to ADEA, too. Thanks so much.

After speaking to many of our faculty members, Deans, and student body this morning, although the idea is attractive and supported by many to invite LSU 4th year dental students to complete some of their graduation requirements here at our school, it is not as simple as it sounds.

My Clinical Affairs Dean assured me that since the LSU Dental School Dean is currently the ADEA President, they have already been brainstorming on what they could do. Since the hurricane disaster is so new yet, LSU Dental really just have to sit and wait to see what will happen to them and their city. If the dental school only closes or being shut down for 3 months, then most likely the seniors will just graduate 3 months later! But if the school is shut down for 3 years, then the possibility of transferring their student to other schools will be discussed.

At this time, I was reassured that the administration level will work out a solution for LSU Dental School. In the larger scheme of things, I guess graduating LSU dental students on time wouldn't be a priority to the city of New Orleans. Think about it, these 4th year dental students probably have family and friends that they have/need to attend and/or help to. Man...... 😎

Our dean just posted a statement on the lsuhsc website, saying that they are working out a plan for us to complete our education in a timely manner. They are working out the logistics. I think it'll be in Baton Rouge.

In the meantime, the thugs that evacuated New Orleans are running armed in the streets of Baton Rouge. The banks are only letting one person in at a time. It's really crazy. My insurance company's computers are down, so I can't even get any emergency money. My student loan money was supposed to be disbursed yesterday. Oh well, my daughter and I have food, shelter, and our health. I guess we should count our blessings.

I wonder what options are being given for the incoming class? Man, I just never thought that this would be THIS big...my heart and prayers go out to all those involved.

By the "incoming class," do you mean the freshman? If so, they started in July, and as far as I understand they are going to set up classes and labs for the freshman and sophomores. I don't know if they'll interview a new set of students who would enter next year. If so, anybody with low GPA's get your applications in now. I don't think there will be much of a demand for those spots.

The problem is going to be for juniors and seniors b/c of all of the equipment and patient pool needed. Nobody is going to be able to afford dental care I wouldn't think. The only thing that would make sense is if dental school is somehow moved to Baton Rouge, Lafayette, or Shreveport. But, they would have to move fast with that project, so that the current juniors and seniors aren't set back too badly. We do have a few dental clinics set up around the state. Maybe they will have us rotate through those while they are building more facilities. We could do dentures in nursing homes...that doesn't require too much equipment. I'm brainstorming like crazy. I'm coming up with lots of solutions, and I'm sure they are as well. It'll just be interesting to see what they come up with.

UMKC dental school will be enrolling several LSU dental students very soon (next week, I think). I'm not sure what year those students are in. Welcome to our school and our prayers are with you and your families.
Here's a link from the Missouri school system related to hurricane Katrina http://www.umsystem.edu/ums/news/releases/news05090101.shtml.

Come to Shreveport! The community dental clinic here is closed right now b/c the only dentist they had quit to go into private practice.

I heard that the good citizens of New Orleans have looted and destroyed LSU School of Dentistry. What a wonderful city.

I've been busy the past few days, putting my life back together. I haven't had a chance for SDN. I have not heard anything about the dental school looting. That totally sucks. I have about $10K in dental equipment there. It's bad enough that my entire f**** house is gone, my community is gone.....and now maybe two sets of handpieces, two sets of loupes, and all the other crap of mine. I hope that's a rumor. Since January, the dental school had serious security issues with laptops, handpieces, other equipment being stolen on a daily basis.....inside job for sure. We had to watch our stuff like hawks. I hadn't had anything stolen b/c I was so careful with it....and now!!!! I'm going to have fun paying back all the money for sh** that's gone!!! I'm done venting now.
