I wanted to know what things do you always carry with you from/to class or wish you had but always forget. Are there some things you expected you would use a lot but barely touch or things that you are surprised that ended up being helpful? Was anything a waste of money? I am about to be a D1. Be as general or specific as you want (down to chapstick/change for the vending machine or just the big items you use day to day).

computer, battery charger, a pen (a must in clinic), change for the vending machine, your cellphone (my patients schedule in my phone), I bring my phone charger because sometimes I stay late for lab work and need to charge my phone/call patients

Should be pretty much the same as undergrad. I would also bring an external hard drive, for sharing "study guides" (old tests).

Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash for when you have clinic on each other right after lunch.

Checkbook, since you may have to write the school a check to lift a block (a check for needlestick insurance, parking fee, etc).

Dental school name badge
Face blotter (for oily skin)

Baggie of several OTC pain medications (aspirin, Advil, Excedrin Migraine, midol - you'd be surprised how often headaches or other aches and pains come up)

There's probably more, I keep a lot of things in my bag, but I use everything on a regular enough basis to justify carrying all that crap in my bag.

why carry a laptop and an Ipad?
I use the ipad in lab, I have one of those bomb proof cases that's dust and water resistant. Our bench tops are fairly narrow and having the computer along with all our instruments and stuff gets a little crowded. Plus I try to keep my computer clean which can be hard in lab. On the other hand, I like having a full sized keyboard in lectures to take notes. I don't think it's worth buying both if you don't already own them, but if you have it I think you'll find its fairly convenient.

why carry a laptop and an Ipad?

Different purposes. I don't carry them both all the time. But the iPad I have a patient education app on that I use during clinic and I take some notes on it (the type where a majority of the information is on the powerpoint and supplemental notes will only be needed). I use the laptop to take notes in classes that don't have all the information contained in the powerpoint and a lot of typing is required
