you should be more specific as to what residency they are aiming for. Different fields look at different things in selection criteria.

what do you mean "polling med student who have no clue"... this is a no brainer, I don't think there is ANY situation where Step 2 is more important than Step 1...

I don't exactly follow the original post either - but I agree, step 2 is never more important than step 1 (as evidenced by the fact that it is not required for any residency programs and then subsequently plays virtually no role in competitive fellowship matching).
