Do most ophthalmology residents work 80 hours/ week or more too or do you have more time for sleep/ studying?? How is call compared to other specialties like OBGYN???

Ophthalmology call it typically not as frequent as OB call and is often taken from home.

You can find more info on the fridea website and by searhing the websites of individual programs which often post their call schedules.

Ophtho is fun, but it's a hell of a lot busier/harder than the stereotypes.

home call can be misleading. you cover multiple hospitals (3-4) and are not given a post-call day afterwards. it can be busier than in-house call.

I actually just started and definitely agree. At least in house call gives you the next afternoon off. Covering a lot of hospitals (ED and consults), answering service calls, etc. is not horrible, but still busier than most people think.

Believe me, I am a PGY2 ophtho taking home-call; it is very busy... covering three hospitals, answering calls, seeing consults. and then you don't get to go early the post call day because you were taking at "home-call".

I agree. "Home call" is very deceiving. Ophtho is not as cushy as it sounds, at least not in your 1st year. I would say i worked almost as many hours/week as my internship year. The only difference is that I was a little less stressed out. But it is very busy. You can bet that anything eye-related that comes into the hospital will be seen by you, no matter how simple or straight-forward it is.

DH is PGY-4... he easily works 80 hours/week. Usually at the hospital by 7 a.m. for surgeries... often there until 9:00 p.m. at night. Goes in Saturday mornings to see his post-ops... can be there at least until noon depending on how punctual his patients are. Let's see...

Call first year was intense. Usually went back and forth to the ER many times. Not on site, as with PGY-1 surgery year, though. Gets better second and third years where you serve as back-up call. Still gets calls throughout the night, though... and will have to go in for ruptured globes, trauma, etc. A lot depends on how good the ER staff is as well as the residents you're supporting.

One difference between call as ophth resident vs. surgery... He is expected to be at the clinic the next morning, though... regardless of how much time he spent at the hospital the night before. No post-call day, except for as 1st year.
