I took Spanish in college and in high school, but I forgot a lot of it. What the best free online source to use, mainly for conversational medical Spanish.

Also, watch Spanish TV. Watch the news, soap operas, sports...anything. There are tons of Spanish channels. Watch movies in Spanish language, even better if it's a movie you are really familiar with. It's almost like a total immersion. And make sure you talk back to the television...in Spanish!

Yep. Music is great too. Calle 13 is really good imo and it's fairly simple to understand. To learn, I liked to listen to a few songs many times per day. Check lyrics once out or twice if you aren't hearing it well. With repetition it really helps you get used to hearing the language spoken quickly (ie normally). Reading the news in Spanish ( bbc español is good) helps too. Add new vocab to an anki deck if you aren't remembering new words well.

  • duolingo.com
  • italki.com has free languange exchanging and also paid tutors
  • baselang.com is not free, but it is only 99$ a month for UNLIMITED tutoring, a good summer activity. You can get a $1 week long trial too.
  • just head to your library because they probably have children's books in spanish.
  • almost all of the disney movies on netflix are dubbed in spanish.
  • There is a short medical spanish playlist here https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhcIserVV5PXGUA6R6ePEqLjRcwL7yiXu
You can duolingo or other similar activities until the cows come home, but if you really want to jumpstart your memory you should speak with natives on a service like italki or baselang.

It's only free if you are lacking in scruples... But I thought Pimsleur's Spanish series was fantastic. I had the same background as you - took Spanish classes throughout middle/high school, but was not really able to apply it in the real world. My ability to actually communicate got so much better with Pimsleur. Each lesson walks you through a conversation, and it prompts you to actually speak a ton which improves your pronunciation and makes you more comfortable.

Not being able to see how the words are spelled is a good thing, I think. When you see a written word, your brain comes up with an idea of how it should be pronounced, and you end up with a weird American accent. If you just hear a word and then repeat it, you develop a much more natural sound.

Good ideas here... (aside from getting something for free by lacking scruples). I'd also suggest trying to find a primary care provider who treats nostly Spanish speaking patients and asking if you can shadow. I've learned a ton of Spanish from an advanced practice nurse who works in a federally qualified health clinic (FQHC).
