PD sent me an electronic signed letter through email and told me they think I'm a strong candidate and will be a good addition to their program.
Any one has idea if this means I have a big chance to be ranked high or PD just sends similar letters to all interviewees? Thanks.

At the very least it means you will be ranked. And it probably means you are ranked fairly high. But you shouldn't rank programs based on where you think they are ranking you. If you want to go somewhere else, rank that someplace else higher. If you don't, then don't. The algorithm favors you. You don't get extra points for matching at your #1 if it isn't truly your first choice.

tahnks a lot for your reply.

Agree with yaah.

Any such non-committal letter, in my mind, means little. You want to hear the words, "you are ranked to match". Other than that, don't hang your head on these kinds of communications.

Even that means ****...pardon my expletive. Hearing bad stories about places that said, "YARTM" or "we have set aside a spot for you" and the candidate did not match there make me very skeptical. I will just wait for March 15th until I give any credibility to any correspondence with the PD, etc.

To the OP, I have received comments:
You are one of our top ranked candidates.
You are a very strong candidate and believe you would be a great fit here.
We are excited about the prospect of you joining our program and please keep us in mind after your interviews are completed.

Like AM said, these are very kind words, but only that. I don't give any meaning to these statements. And again (time and again) Yaah knows so listen to these two veterans. 🙂

wow. I haven't received any such emails. do you received these in response to thank you emails or just out of the blue? so does that mean these prograsm don't like me?

?#1:about half were in response to thank you emails/letters. the other half, out of the blue.

?#2:absolutely NOT! just wait and see. (they liked you enough to interview you.)

Keep your chin up!

Agreed with Villin...I've got quite a few emails/letters saying the same...

We'll see come match time!😀

I sent my thank you notes via snail mail. now I'm thinking i should have sent emails to see what responses i get back.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I didn't get any letters from PD's, and most of my interviews have been extremely positive.

Letters, or lack thereof, mean very little. If you want to impress a program beyond an interview, go back for a second look and spend a day shadowing a resident (and make sure you don't act like a tool when you're there 😛 ).

Otherwise, don't freak out regarding these letters. Not worth it.

I spent months freaking out that I wasn't going to get any interviews, and I did. It's not a lot, but it's enough.

Life is too short.

And whatever they might think of you, some PDs just don't send any sort of letters, period. MUSC was that way. And made it clear in advance too. I rather liked that.

The pathology program director at our school said it is common for candidates to be told something like "you'll be a great fit" or "you are a great candidate" at or after the interview and stressed that it is very important to NOT let any of that affect your rank-order list.
