Columbia P&S: a) Location, location, location.

Manhattan is, without a doubt in my heart, my favorite city, my favorite place, on Earth. Though I grew up and spent most of my childhood a long hour and 45 minutes to 2 hour train ride north of Grand Central in a town that was on the rural end of things, each time I stepped out of that terminal, I immediately felt at home. My parents used to marvel -- and, still do, really -- at the fact that I always seemed to be completely calm and comfortable traversing those streets, a stark contrast to my usual high-stung, anxiety ridden self. My mother, may she now rest in peace, remarked that I began begging, pleading, for us to move down to the city from the time I was five.

Now that I reside in an urban area that is a mere 15-30 minutes train ride outside of Manhattan [and an even shorter bus ride into the Bronx], depending on the train one takes and the stop one exits at, my love of this place has only solidified. While other areas, including those -- such as my own residence -- that are directly outside the city, have their perks, none of them feel like the Big Apple to me. None of them feel like home. Those city streets do.

It has been life-time goal to work, reside and raise a family in Manhattan. While going to medical school there does not quite accomplish that, it certainly is a step towards it.

b) Research: Funding -- and Funding/Work In My Field Of Passion

Columbia P&S's research capacities are what, for me, cause me to prefer it over the likes of other NYC schools such as Cornell, NYU [and, quite honestly these two have the best location], Mt. Sinai, Einstein and SUNY Downstate. Not only do they triumph in research funding overall, they triumph in research in my chosen field, psychiatry. Even more exciting, to me, is the presence of their psychoanalytic institute, which ensures that they will always be doing research in the topics I feel most passionately for: attachment, early childhood trauma and the treatment of the negative consequences of these events. I can feel myself became hyper-activated just speaking about it.

As someone who wants to go into research, this is all A Big Deal to me. My research interests are kind of niche, so finding PIs to work under and be mentored by is of immense benefit to me. Finding an entire institute of potential mentors? That is a dream. Going to Columbia P&S would, in my opinion, give me the best chance to develop, network and grow in my chosen field and niche.

c) Appreciation of The Humanities and Varied Interests.

As someone who posses a diverse and eclectic collection of interests outside of the sciences -- such as writing, photography, graphic/web design, app development, philosophy, advocacy and a long list of others -- I appreciate that Columbia seems to value such things in their students and, in fact, encourages them. Looking at their list of clubs, I can already spot many that I would love to be involved with and, from student commentary on SDN, it seems that, unlike other schools, P&S students truly are. In addition, as someone who is a writer at heart, their Program in Narrative Medicine causes my mind to spark and flutter. It is such a wonderful idea and, though I cannot see myself pursuing the full masters degree, getting involved in other ways, such as through an elective or seminar, sounds beyond perfect. I mean, really: combining medicine and writing?! THAT IS SO ME. It was if the program was developed with me in mind.

Bottom line: Though it will not be my time to apply for a couple of years now [at the very least], I want this school SO, SO badly.

Other top choices, in no particular order and for a variety (of which 'USNEWS rankings is not one) include:

  • Harvard
  • Duke
  • UCSF
  • Stanford
  • NYU
  • Mt. Siani
  • SUNY-Downstate
  • Pitt
  • Case Western
  • Cleveland Clinic

Your love for Manhattan is on par with my love for Portland, Oregon: the City of Roses.

Another OHSU vote here. I also essentially grew up on the Hill, and it became prime stomping grounds throughout my teenaged years. It was the most valuable after-school program I could have ever hoped for. Kindest, most sincere and accomplished healthcare staff I've ever interacted with. Go Oregon.

Emory, hands down. Hopefully it'll be my dream come true when I apply next year.

The choice to pick TISOM over others is simple. Here at TypicalIndian School Of Medicine we don't believe in GPA's or MCAT's, instead, we just draw names from a hat because it's less stressful for us and the applicants. This saves the applicants from having to write BS and even more importantly, saves us from reading their blatant BS.

But real talk, I'd love to get into BU or tufts because Boston is my favorite place in America.

I;ll attend TISOM if there's butter chicken there 🙂

I love that hill! It's like a giant pit of green! I just wanna jump off the side and into Heaven's embrace!

ANY U.S. MD school, sorry if i'm sounding selfish lol

...and rain, pine trees, clip board beggars, and great microbrews.

Not a drinker, but the rest of that stuff can be found most anywhere. We did have a little too much rain this year, though. That sucked. Now it's wet heat.

UCLA! They have affiliated hospitals all over the LA area for rotations, and each one has its own unique flavor. On top of that, they've got global health rotations and top-notch research. I've spent the last 18 years of my life in San Diego, so UCLA would mean a change of pace without losing the weather/beaches of SoCal. UCLA would be perfect for me!

Sinai,Columbia, or NYU basically I just want to go back to New York!

Any school in Texas, honestly. I was born and raised there. It's where my parents came after coming from Nigeria. Even though I attend school out of state, I'll probably end up back in Texas. 😛 If I had to pick, it'd probably be between UTMB (Galveston) and BCM.

My dream school would be my state school since I don't like being in huge amount of debt.

Emory, hands down. Hopefully it'll be my dream come true when I apply next year.
I actually go there! I might apply to the med school, but I'm mostly likely staying in Texas... unless they magically offer me a full scholarship.

University of Chicago - love the area, hyde park is a beautiful place. There pass/fail system interests me and it is one of the bet medical schools in the country. +1 that is is close to me.

Columbia/Cornell - it is all about location! NYC has got to be thhe best place to practice medicine to get a wide variety of cases! The prestige factor plays into these too, they seem like amazing places to go to school.

Fellow Nigerian here! 👍 Baylor is also one of my top choices because it is a great school that is not too far from home (parents moved to Oklahoma from Nigeria). Aside from that and my state school, pretty much anywhere with warm weather. I'll make an exception for NY/Chicago schools (always wanted to experience big city life 😛).

That's quite the passion 😱

You're not going to meet a hot Southern girl in med school, let alone any hot girl. She might be med school hot, but I'd recommend looking in the undergrad pool for a dimepiece.

You might be surprised. And this is coming from someone who attended undergrad at a school that just got rated a top school for most beautiful campus and students by Newsweek (lol...however reliable that is though).

But really, most all of the schools I applied to are dream schools for me, I'd be grateful for an acceptance to any of them.

Listed in no particular order

Mayo, Mayo, Mayo, Mayo, Mayo, Ketchup, Mayo, Mayo, Mayo, Mayo

Good luck with getting into Ketchup. You may have to aim lower and apply to Sauerkraut and Relish. Stay away from Mustard, though. Very malignant program.

Good luck.

CCLCM and Pritzker. Ideally, I'd like to stay in Chicago, but then again, I'm sure I'll be happy wherever I end up.

Yale, Penn, Georgetown, Wash U are my top choices

SGU, duhh..

Any well respected school in a big city (preferably NYC, Chi Town, or Philly) and not in Ohio.

Probably with the exception of this, i would withdraw all my Ohio apps if i got accepted somewhere out of Ohio.
