Columbia P&S: a) Location, location, location.
Manhattan is, without a doubt in my heart, my favorite city, my favorite place, on Earth. Though I grew up and spent most of my childhood a long hour and 45 minutes to 2 hour train ride north of Grand Central in a town that was on the rural end of things, each time I stepped out of that terminal, I immediately felt at home. My parents used to marvel -- and, still do, really -- at the fact that I always seemed to be completely calm and comfortable traversing those streets, a stark contrast to my usual high-stung, anxiety ridden self. My mother, may she now rest in peace, remarked that I began begging, pleading, for us to move down to the city from the time I was five.
Now that I reside in an urban area that is a mere 15-30 minutes train ride outside of Manhattan [and an even shorter bus ride into the Bronx], depending on the train one takes and the stop one exits at, my love of this place has only solidified. While other areas, including those -- such as my own residence -- that are directly outside the city, have their perks, none of them feel like the Big Apple to me. None of them feel like home. Those city streets do.
It has been life-time goal to work, reside and raise a family in Manhattan. While going to medical school there does not quite accomplish that, it certainly is a step towards it.
b) Research: Funding -- and Funding/Work In My Field Of Passion
Columbia P&S's research capacities are what, for me, cause me to prefer it over the likes of other NYC schools such as Cornell, NYU [and, quite honestly these two have the best location], Mt. Sinai, Einstein and SUNY Downstate. Not only do they triumph in research funding overall, they triumph in research in my chosen field, psychiatry. Even more exciting, to me, is the presence of their psychoanalytic institute, which ensures that they will always be doing research in the topics I feel most passionately for: attachment, early childhood trauma and the treatment of the negative consequences of these events. I can feel myself became hyper-activated just speaking about it.
As someone who wants to go into research, this is all A Big Deal to me. My research interests are kind of niche, so finding PIs to work under and be mentored by is of immense benefit to me. Finding an entire institute of potential mentors? That is a dream. Going to Columbia P&S would, in my opinion, give me the best chance to develop, network and grow in my chosen field and niche.
c) Appreciation of The Humanities and Varied Interests.
As someone who posses a diverse and eclectic collection of interests outside of the sciences -- such as writing, photography, graphic/web design, app development, philosophy, advocacy and a long list of others -- I appreciate that Columbia seems to value such things in their students and, in fact, encourages them. Looking at their list of clubs, I can already spot many that I would love to be involved with and, from student commentary on SDN, it seems that, unlike other schools, P&S students truly are. In addition, as someone who is a writer at heart, their Program in Narrative Medicine causes my mind to spark and flutter. It is such a wonderful idea and, though I cannot see myself pursuing the full masters degree, getting involved in other ways, such as through an elective or seminar, sounds beyond perfect. I mean, really: combining medicine and writing?! THAT IS SO ME. It was if the program was developed with me in mind.
Bottom line: Though it will not be my time to apply for a couple of years now [at the very least], I want this school SO, SO badly.

Your love for Manhattan is on par with my love for Portland, Oregon: the City of Roses.
