I was just curious what everyone thought about this...
If you have a sibling that is attending or attended a school you are applying to, and you have a decent GPA and MCAT, do you think that school is more likely to accept you?

Maybe, assuming your sib was a good student. But I don't actually know.

I think they would be more likely to interview and look at one's appl. but not necessarily accept. They may be more willing to state in advance what that sibling should do to become more competitive.

well, i guess i'll see if i get an interview to the school my brother attended. i'm out of state, and it's a state school, so it's not a sure thing. i did mention it in my application and will probably bring it up in my interview. the pluses are that it probably shows legitimate interest in the school, and hey, your sibling is a potential donor. i doubt it counts for much, though.

I don't think knowing somebody or having a family member there will help overlook bad grades or red flags on your application but I firmly believe that who you know can help you out a great deal in any application process, especially one as competitive as medical school admissions where any little nudge over the hump is good.

That's what I was thinking. I realize that good grades and MCAT are important, but a little extra help would be nice! 😉
