Would you guys please answer this two questions, you don't have to take so much time, a quick answer it's just fine, but if someone would like to explain his/her answer a little further...well, I would apreciate it.
I am an MSII and I want to know if the speciality one's choose has a relation somehow with a few pre clinical classes.
Thanks a lot.🙂

I'm an Ortho Intern.

My school used a systems-based curriculum. My favorite unit was far and away neuroscience. The course director was a neuropathologist, now dead, who was easily the most dynamic and intelligent professor I have ever had.

I'm not sure I understand your question and you mention two questions, yet I only see one.

Are you asking whether physicians choose their specialties based on pre-clinical courses?

Sometimes. If you really liked Renal physiology, you might consider becoming a nephrologist.

I, however, never considered my specialty until clinical rotations during 3rd year. We did PBL in a systems approach. I liked cardiovascular the best and considered becoming a cardiologist until I did surgery...CT surgery or Vascular surgery was never a consideration however.

Radiology - physiology.

I know it's not the scripted answer, but it's true. Funny thing is, the specialties closely associated with physiology make me want to vomit.

Pathology. Probably the two classes that I enjoyed the most during preclin were path and micro (which also contained immunology, which I really liked). Never thought in a million years I would be in a path residency, though.

To the OP: are you trying to figure out which specialty you're most suited for, based on your favorite MS-I/MS-II subject?

If so, just say so!

I'm in General Surgery now, eventually hope to enter Cardiothoracic Surgery. I enjoyed Pathology, Cardiac/Pulmonary/Renal Physiology and Pharmacology during the first two years of med school.

I'm a surgery intern.

I really liked Micro and Path, but I would never do either ID or Path.

you would think I should have really liked anatomy, but I really didn't like it very much.

Emergency Medicine and I liked Micro and Pharm the most.....

I seem to find that almost universally among my 4th year colleagues a real interest in Path is highly correlated with application to IM residencies. I think that sort of makes sense to me.

I loved path and enjoyed physiology a fair amount too, especially cardiovascular physiology. I'm in ENT.

Thank you all for the replies, I hope the thread stays longer.
I wasn't exactly trying to find out if I was suited for a certain speciality...blade...(just kidding 🙂). Actually I will be taking physiology next semester (in a couple of months cuz Im finishing this one), so my knowledges are kinda limited as you can see; I just wanted to see if the speciality one chooses has some relation with pre clinical stuff, It seems like it's that related.

P.d: Anatomy sucks, Im currently taking something called Advanced Anatomy or Anatomy II cuz here in Costa Rica we have two take Anatomy for two semesters, and thank God Im finishing my secong cuz it's driving me nuts, it starts as something cool cuz it's probably the first contact with medicine related topics but it gets soooo boring as time passes, so bald and square, Im definetly ready to start with something different, that's why Im excited with physiology.

surgery- favorite class was intro to internal medicine

I was just extrapolating that you figured, hey, if I like (blank pre-clinical subject), maybe that means I'm suited for (blank residency type).

Or maybe I'm wrong. 🙂

Pattern? Is this true for other surgeons here?

physiatry - Neuroanatomy pre-clinical and Neurology clinical -- only classes that I was top of my class in.

I didn't particularly care for anatomy either. Part of it was my lab group sucked but for some reason it didn't appeal to me greatly. Funny thing is the hardest section of the course for me was "Head and Neck" and that's exactly what field I'm in. Oh well, funny how that works out sometimes.

Going into Emergency Medicine - I liked Pulmonary, Renal, and the hands-on part of anatomy (but not the formaldehyde :barf:) and micro the best.

IM -- physiology and pathophys: renal & pulm

Abhorred gross anatomy
Abhorred surgery -- let' just say Im not a fan of dissection!
Loved neurophysiology
Loved Intro to Clinical Neurosciences
Loved Intro to Internal Medicine

Going into Neurology!
