I am currently a freshman in UG. I will be starting my premed classes next year. Should I shadow a DO this summer? If so how would I go about hooking up with a DO and shadowing him/her.

You can start by going www.osteopathic.org and click on Find A DO. You can search by location but as I find out not all DOs are registered through this website. Another place to look is your state's board of registration in medicine. Do a google for this. Some of them let you search by DO and location. Once you find somebody and their contact information, try sending them a letter or if you can find it, an e-mail. If that doesn't work try calling them. Good luck.

when one usually refers to "shadowing a doctor" are they referring to a one shot deal, or repeated and continued visits of working wiht the doctor?

You work this out with the doctor. I told my doctor (when I was asking if he would let me shadow) that I would like as much time as possible, but was willing to take whatever he would give me (eg weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc). Let the doctor know what you would like, but be flexible. He/she may only want to deal with you one time, whereas others are more helpful and want to give you as much time you want/need. Most realize that you're going to eventually ask for a letter, so I would guess they would also realize that you'll want more than a one time deal. Again, just work it out with your doctor, on an individual basis. Good luck!

I stressed out about finding a DO to shadow and shouldn't have (I had already been shadowing an MD for several months) because it was easier to find a DO who was willling than I had thought that it would be.

I did two things. I checked the on-line physician directory from a local hospital and I also went through the phone book.

The first person that I called said that they were currently too busy, but would be willing to do it in a few months. The other Dr called me back the same day and said that he wouldn't mind at all. And he too has been flexible about the number of days.

So, I shadow a pediatrician every other Saturday and I've been shadowing an OB/GYN on Wednesdays for the past month. I am going to stop shadowing the OB/GYN after this week cuz I would like to find someone in another field to shadow.

Both Drs have been absolutely great; they take time where they can to explain everything to me.

I'm sure you will have no problem finding someone!
