I was very into MD, and never thought of DO, but now am considering. I haven't taken the mcat yet, so i thought that i wouldn't be able to start school (if i was accepted) untill 2009.

I see that DO school admission deadlines go into march! Is this accurate? If so, have you guys sent out all your applications yet/

Wait a minute, so you haven't taken the MCAT yet but want to be accepted for 2008? If so you better register for the January MCAT because it's highly highly unlikely you would be accepted without an MCAT score.

Applying to DO schools is almost exactly the same as applying to MD schools. You submit a general primary that goes to all the schools, then you get a secondary, then (hopefully) you get an interview.

As with MD schools, it is in your best interest to apply as early as possible. Even though they take applications up until March at some schools, they begin issuing acceptances in September, so you'll be competing for very few spots if you don't submit till the Spring. If you're serious about applying to DO as well as MD, I'd would highly recommend you do the applications and get them all in at the same time, and don't put off the DO ones just because some accept applications late in the season.

honestly, up until a year ago, I was not very aware of the practice. after some research, I became intrigued by it, as I think it is a more patient-docotr interaction approach to medicine than md. my set abck was not taking the mcat in september as I was supposed to, which I regret dearly.

Do you think that I should wait to apply in august? I really don't want to start school next year (2009).

would I be looked down on if I called the schools about this? (''man, this kid waited till last minute'')

thanks,
-mike

First off, stop using your name. You should try to keep some aminimity on SDN.

So you want to apply this year and you haven't taken the MCAT? Yes, I'd recommend waiting until next year. It won't hurt at all to call the schools you're looking at and asking them about it, but way behind for this application season. You're going to be competing for a very limited number of seats in March, and you probably won't get into schools that you will next year if you just wait to apply then.

My advice - don't apply now. Study and focus on the MCAT, knock it out of the park, and apply really early next year.
