For those of you going to a medical school in another area, when do you plan on moving? I can't decide whether to move earlier in the summer to get a feel for the area or moving jsut a few weeks before school starts so i can spend a little more time with my friends and family.

Depends on how far you have to move (and the level of your familiarity with your destination). If you are moving across the country, definitely start earlier.

Me, I'll probably stay in California, so I'll move later.

Yo, I'm not leaving until a week or so before school starts. I gotta get all my good drinking time in with all the kids back home before I fall off the wagon when school starts. Once I return from New Zealand that is. Deferral is a great thing.

Right now I'm seriously leaning toward moving just 2-3 weeks prior to when the school starts even though it's very likely that I'd have to move all the way across to the other side of the country. 🙁 The reason is that my mom would be living alone once I move out. I'd also love to spend more time with my friends. As med students, we really don't get that much vacation time to fly back and forth, and my guess is that we'd be spending a significant portion of our vacation doing research/volunteer/whatever to help us prepare for the future career. 😱

just 2-3 weeks? I don't know about you, but that sounds really early for me. hell, i'm moving cross country and i think a week and a half should be good.

I'm thinking the sooner, the better.

I want to be completely settled in by the time school starts, including exploring most of Miami so I have a sense of my fav restaurants and bars and areas (new city for me). I'm thinking 3 weeks'ish, but mayb 4+ if I get a place from the first of the month (would be July 1 for me).

Ohh man you guys must be excited. Haha I hope I'll be doing that for the class of 2010...It'll be super exciting for me because I love being on my own, but I've never actually lived anywhere else other than my home, ever. *jitters with turkeyexcitement*

Gotta take the MCATs, apply correctly, interview, and get accepted first though 😀

Haha Turkeyman 🙂. Except for the MCAT part (done in august) I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully we will both be talking about moving this time next year too! Discussing moving is far more fun than figuring out how early to do supplementals!

im thinkin 1.5 weeks is good...im only movin 30 miles away 🙂

Q. When are you moving?

A. After I find out all acceptance options, then I'll know where to move. Probably a month prior to school since I'm buying a home and will have a lot to get settled in.

The longer I can rake in the salary the better.

I can't move until my current lease is up Aug 1. Then I'm on my way! Wherever that might be... I wish that I could move sooner, I'd love to explore and settle in beforehand. Now I'm only gonna have like 10 days to get unpacked and figure out where the grocery store is.

I would like to move earlier to get a feel for the area, but my finances won't allow that. I need to stay on my job/jobs and make as much dough as possible for my move. I'll probably move in Late july/Early August depending on my school's start date.

I was thinking about moving at the beginning of summer (as soon as I graduate) and getting a job. That way I can learn the city and hopefully make some non-medical friends. I am still torn though since where I am moving is supposed to be terribly hot in the summer and I hate heat.

Aw, our little plantain is moving to the city ...

Yeah, I am torn about the heat thing too. I am not so keen on a Southern summer, and I'd like to stay where I live right now for as long as possible, because I'm really going to miss living there. But at the same time, school starts the first week in August, so I have to get down there sometime in July, which basically means signing a lease for July 1. Unless I want to cut it really close and sign a lease for Aug 1, but since I'll have no furniture or any idea where the hell I am going, and will need to set up house, that just seems... risky. Maybe I can find a place for July 15th

I'm going to earn the big dollars for as long as possible. So late July/early August for me.

That is exactly what I am doing. I start a new and exciting job as a receptionist tomorrow (hah!), so I am concentrating in clearing my credit card debt from applying to med school, and saving money to sign a lease and get all the stuff I need when I move. So I am thinking late-mid july or early august, depending on the school.

Hope that's enough time to find a place and stuff...I've lived at home the whole time ! 😛

I just hope I don't get bored. I am used to medical stuff. There is always something new and exciting happening in a hospital. And now I am a health educator for 4th grade. The kids are awesome and it's never boring. I don't want to be sitting in front of a desk all day, counting down the hours until I get home....that is exactly why I picked medicine!
