I'm trying to make vacation plans for April/May (I have 2 free months before graduating) time right now, but since I have no idea where I will end up or when they will start orientation, it's a little hard to make airline plans. I graduate at the end of May and I'll definitely be back in the country by then, but I'm trying to decide how early I need to get back in order to make all the arrangements for starting residency. When did your residency begin orientation and what is the earliest orientation you've heard of for EM programs?

This is a GREAT question. I've been wondering the same thing. On the trail, I remember different programs saying end of June/beginning of July but that could be anything from mid June realistically to July 1, no?

I'd love to know the answer to this!

ACLS/BLS Recertification for me is June 10-11. If you are up to date on that, then June 15th for orientation, and then the 22nd for start date.

Wow, it looks like programs start around mid-june...I thought that everyone started first week in July...so much for that vaction that i was planning....

I think most have some sort of GME orintation, ACLS/ATLS/PALS, and things like that to get out of the way before the work starts on July 1

June 25th for us.

mid-June.

One of my friends started as early as June 1.

silly question...do we get paid for the orientation days?

Depends on the program. Some do, some don't.
While I think they all should pay if you're required to be there, apparently I don't make the rules.

Wow. Really? I would not want to be at a place that didn't start paying me when I started working...

June 15-ish for us, and we got paid for orientation time. Best to ask your PD on Match Day, if you get that post-Match call.

Mine starts June 21 this year.

June 14th

plz forgive me i'm new around here, but I can answer some questions. As a current program director, this the way we worked it in several shops. Hospital wide orientation starts late June and I have never known a place that doesn't pay for this. Hospital orientation consists of painful long less than exciting stuff the gov. says you will have. Generally we, in the ED that have a social gathering and get to know each other. In my current residency, your first month will be seeing a few patients but really it is one long orientation to being a doctor.
