Do they start at the same time as a school year, or earlier?

If you are referring to predoctoral internships (?), it varies, but anywhere from July 1st to August 1st typically. I'm sure there are some exceptions to this.

Thanks. Yes, I was referring to postdoctoral internships - trying to see if there would be time to take a (not part of the program) class the summer prior.

For postdocs, I'm not as sure. I know most neuropsych fellowships start July 1st, but again this varies slightly by program. Unless you post doc is in the same city as your university, it probably wont leave much time to move and settle in before you start, and thats assuming the summer class doesn't overlap with the start date of the postdoc.

Oh, sorry, I did mean predoctoral internships. I've got postdocs on the brain today. But that is also good to know, because if I can't take the class prior to predoctoral internship I'd like to consider it before a postdoc. Thanks.

predocs= anywhere from June to September

if you are clever you can swing some time off between your 4th year and internship

but you should be careful as formalized postdocs tend to start july 1. so conceivably you could get in a situation where you are unable to accept a postdoc b/c you chose a predoc to get said vacation.

also: if you are into research you should carefully consider if it is funding season or not.

or if you are going to do an informal postdoc, it has absolutely no bearing.
