When do most programs send out the bulk of their invites?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Somewhat depends on the specialty and program. But it is EARLY, so I wouldn't worry just yet...many programs don't send out invites until the committee has met and many may not do so until a month or so has passed.

for me it's not a matter of panic, but logistics. i'd like to do a lot of interviews and fortunately i can get the money to do so. what i can't get more of is time. if programs are waiting until Nov to invite people, that only leaves so much time to actually interview, and with Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year in there, that's time lost also. interview season only runs until late Jan in most places, and there's only so much time in there. my point is that a candidate may have to turn down an interview from a program for lack of time. and had that candidate been able to interview they may have found a great fit for themselves. but with limited information we candidates have to make decisions based on the information we can get. so i guess i just wish programs would allow things to be a bit more spread out for us by simply moving things into motion in late Sept-early Oct rather than late Oct-early Nov.

Unfortunately, sometimes it does come down to having to make a decision between two inteviews...some places interview a ridiculously large number of times, others (such as Penn State) only offer a few dates. Sometimes you'll only get a couple of weeks notice which can make things difficult for the candidates in terms of time and money.

As usual, the system is not generally set up for your convenience.

I'm experiencing the same problem. I think I'll have more interviews than I can actually attend. I'll have to winnow it down some, but it's hard because I don't feel like I really have enough information without interviewing. 😕
