When do people usually start studying

Hey guys,
I'm currently a second year and I don't know much about the Step 2 yet...I was just wondering when most students usually take the test, and when do they usually start studying for it? I've heard most people take it in Septemberish, and study for a few months before that...can you guys give me your opinions? Any responses would be much appreciated.
