You rank the categorical vs. advanced programs in the order in which you prefer. It may end up that the program goes further down the list to fill their advanced spots than categorical, or vice versa, but there's no "wrong order." Say you rank Program X Categorical (10 spots) first, and Program X Advanced (10 spots) 2nd, and the program has ranked you #11 on their 2 identical lists. If people ranked #1-10 on the program's list all match at program X and prefer categorical, then you will match into an advanced spot. Otherwise, you will get a categorical spot. Even if you had reversed the order on your rank list you would end up with the same end result.
