When do programs finalize their ROLs?

Title kind of speaks for itself. I have a couple interviews in the next 2 weeks and was hoping to email my #1 before they finalize things. Does anyone know what date that is for most places?

how much will saying "you are my #1" help you? I really cant decide between 2 programs and it might be a coin flip at the end, however i dont really want to tell both they are my #1. what to do?

Pretty sure it's program dependent.

I imagine anytime between now and the next week or 2 ...

wont matter. you should definitely send these programs friendly reminders an let them know how interested you are (and why) to keep your name fresh, but I would do this with your top three choices. no need to say "you're #1!!"

i think its usually 2/15 or somewhere around there

told a program they were my number 1 and got a response saying

"thank you for your continued interest. we really hope you will come to this program"

sounded pretty generic what do you all think?

Most programs I went to said they had two identical rank lists for each, so basically whatever one you rank higher you'd get if you matched that program. Only a couple specifically wanted to know my preference as to advanced or categorical...it seemed they had two different lists.

how can that be if each program has a certain number of categorical and advanced spots? If all the people who matched to a certain program chose categorical they all couldn't be categorical; there wouldn't be enough spots.

I really don't want to lose a spot at a certain program because I ranked either adv or cat in the "wrong" order.

I suppose I just have to drink the kool-aid and trust that the match is set up to be in my favor.

You rank the categorical vs. advanced programs in the order in which you prefer. It may end up that the program goes further down the list to fill their advanced spots than categorical, or vice versa, but there's no "wrong order." Say you rank Program X Categorical (10 spots) first, and Program X Advanced (10 spots) 2nd, and the program has ranked you #11 on their 2 identical lists. If people ranked #1-10 on the program's list all match at program X and prefer categorical, then you will match into an advanced spot. Otherwise, you will get a categorical spot. Even if you had reversed the order on your rank list you would end up with the same end result.

This sounds reasonable. It does assumes that programs submit identical lists for both. I suppose that most would do that since there doesn't seem to be a purpose behind wanting a particular candidate but only if they match in a certain fashion.

I think programs might submit different lists if certain applicants express interest in only the categorical or only the advanced track. They would simply leave the uninterested students off one of their lists.

The program lists are inherently different based solely upon some students only applying to either the advanced or categorical tracks but for someone to apply to both and express a disinterest in either seems stupid to me. I guess I didn't clearly outline my question. I'm just curious if a program would leave someone off one of the lists when they applied to both tracks.

For every place I applied to I selected both tracks if they were available and ranking both to increased my contiguous ranks. I couldn't care less if I match adv or cat. I would gladly move twice if it means that I match into anesthesia.

There are certain situations where a person may only want to do an advanced match. Another scenario, other than previously completing an intern year, is for the people who attend osteopathic medical schools. Depending on the state that the Anesthesiology residency is located, there may be different internship requirements for a DO vs. an MD. If the Anesthesia residency is allopathic, their intern year may not qualify a DO for board certification. In that situation, a DO would possibly make that statement.
