Hi,

When do residency programs usually start? I gather that most programs usually start around early July ... but I've also been told that there is some paperwork and other requirements that you have to compelete before that....

I'm planning to take a vacation and return by June 15th. I'm wondering if I should return earlier ...

cheers

Most programs start about the third week in June for orientation and the like. Why not wait until the Match results come out and you know definitely where you are going? The program where you will be going will be sending you a lot of information packets before you actually begin, but if you cannot wait, call them once you know where you are going and find out the exact start date. Hope this helps! 🙂

July 1 is tha traditional start date - but in the experience of me and my friends, you start anywhere from 1-3 weeks earlier. Time to do ACLS, orientation, etc. The program you match to will be able to tell you when you actually have to show up for everything. June 15 might be cutting it close, depending on the program.

BTW, I'll move this to Rotations and Residencies.

Here's a question. Can I get ACLS certified somewhere else prior to starting residency or only at the hospital that I match? I'd rather use the middle two weeks of june to go on vacation.

I'm not sure what specialty you're going into, but make sure you aren't required to have ATLS as well.

Remember the ACLS only takes 2 days of the orientation - you may very well have other stuff they expect you to do in the days leading up to July 1.
