Hi, I know its a long way from now but i will be applying July 2013 right when the next cycle opens. I'm a little fuzzy on the application process timeframe but I have read the optomcas website. Is this correct:

1.Apply on Optomcas in July
2. fill out secondary individual school apps simultaneously (or a few days after you fill out the optomcas?)
3. sit back and wait/hope for interview invitations?

How soon after you apply can you expect an interview invitation and appointment? I was hoping/planning to go abroad in September for like the entire fall 2013, but if I am expecting interviews, would the interviews likely be in fall 2013? Or would they be in the summer, in July or August? Of course I want to stay in the country for the interviews so I'm trying to get a rough timeframe estimate of the application process.

Thanks 🙂

Most people that apply in July and are competitive have interviews in the fall or right before it. I applied in september and had interviews in october and november. A lot of schools don't start their interviewing process until at least august or later

Really? I was afraid that would be the answer lol. It would probably be best to stay in the U.S. around Fall :/ So the schools will call back the competitive applicants first, and they will get the interviews sooner?

I think you'll be fine. If you start your application as soon as it's available in July you might hear back from schools pretty soon. I know SCO starts interviewing in early August. However some schools don't start interviews until late August/early September. It's a matter of research. What schools are you planning on applying to?

I'm applying to NECO, SUNY, SCO, SCCO, Western, PCO, PUCO.. a lot lol
How soon did you get an interview after you applied?
Haha sorry one more question, do you submit the supplemental apps immediately after Optomcas? Or at the same time? or do you need to wait a few days or weeks for clearance or something?

Well my situation was a little weird because I applied in July but took my OAT in October. Some schools offered me interviews without my OAT scores, but other schools waited until October. From your list, I'll list the school I applied to and how soon I heard back from them for an interview:

PCO: 3 weeks after I submitted my application
NECO: 3 days after they got my OAT scores
SUNY: 2 days after they got my OAT scores
SCO: 1 day after they got my OAT scores

As far as supplementals go, each school is different. Some schools have their supplemental applications right on the optomcas website so you submit them together. Other schools tell you to submit your optomas first, and then you can go on their website and fill out your supplemental. Other schools will send you an email with a link to fill out your supplemental after they have received your optomcas information, it just depends.

Thanks that is helpful!! For PCO, you applied in July and they invited you for the interview 3 weeks later, when exactly was your interview date?

They invited me in mid August but told me they wouldn't be starting interviews until September. I interviewed on September 12th.

Thanks!!!

***IF ANYONE else applied in July please let me know what your interview dates were! And how soon they notified you!**

I know from other people that applied in July that certain schools (I don't know exactly which) will call you pretty soon after you submit early but won't give you available dates until late august/september. I would stick around in fall and maybe study abroad in the spring! I definitely recommend study abroad, not for optometry necessarily, but I did it and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had

Yeah i guess the smart thing to do would be to stay in the country in fall :/ I studied abroad last year in Edinburgh but i absolutely want to go study abroad somewhere else while I have the time and before the demands of 4 years of optometry school. Where did you study?

Switzerland! But the program was designed to allow students to travel as much as possible and our classes were only 2-3 days a week max so I got to travel to 7 different countries 🙂 I went to prague, amsterdam, montecarlo, paris, barcelona, munich, and then florence/rome/milan/venice

I was a high school exchange student for a year to French speaking Switzerland and lived with a host family. Been back 2 times. They are like family to me! I love it there!! I miss it🙁
