I'll be starting my residency in July of 2007 but I know that most, if not all, residency programs have a week or more of orientation actvities in the last week of June. My issue is that I am trying to schedule a vacation in June and need to know when I need to be back. I'll be doing Med-Peds but obviously don't know where I'll be doing it!

My question for all of you residents out there...
When did your orientation begin? Did anybody have orientation for more than a week? If so, when in June were you required to be there?

Thanks in advance,
Ben

I think there's a topic in here or in Internal Medicine were PGY1 right now talk about when did orientation started and for how long.

Oreintation began on June 12...lasted 2 weeks. First day of work was June 24.

Do you need to make vacations plans before Match day in mid-march? If not, then wait until you know where you match and ask them then when you start. If you need to make plans earlier, then take your vacation only in the first 1-1 1/2 weeks, although you're still taking a chance with having a schedule conflict.

If you can wait to plan your vacation, do it. One of my co-interns had to cancel a 2 week trip to Indonesia b/c our orientation started on 6/15. Otherwise, as previously mentioned, do it in the first 2 weeks. I ended up having 2 weeks off prior to graduation so I took my vacation then. Best idea I had. If you can swing your schedule to make something like that happen do that instead.

Good luck,

Well, I'm looking to perhaps book a resort vacation and will therefore need to book way ahead of time to get exactly what I want for a reasonable amount of money (more than three months). In a perfect world I would wait until match day and then book what I could, but by waiting until match day I limit my possible choices and increase the price.

Assuming I NEED to book the vacation before match day, how early do the earliest medicine or pediatric programs begin. I know that OB-GYN programs often start rather early but I'm not going into OB-GYN. All you medicine and peds folks, please help.

Has anyone ever heard of a medicine or peds orientation that began earlier than June 15?

Yup. Not my program, but I had classmates in IM AND Peds starting on June 12th of this year.

Hey DRDARIA,
Do you recall which programs started on the 12th?

Well, I know one in Spokane, WA for IM. I'll have to look up which was the Med Peds one. I also saw some people on this board mention starting on the 12th in one of the threads in the IM forum, but I don't know which program they were in. Seems like OHSU had a pretty early orientation for their programs too. You might try looking under the IM thread under the first day of internship thread and seeing what day people posted about their first day-- but remember for most that is first day on the job, and orientation was the week prior. Hope that is some help.

We (OHSU IM) started on the 15th. The only person I know IRL (not counting folks on the board) who started earlier than that was doing surgery at Jefferson.

The first 2 days of our orientation were spent learning to use a computer system that is only used in the outpatient setting. I don't have my continuity clinic at that hospital and have no outpt. rotations at that hospital this year. So it's quite likely that I spent 2 full days learning a computer system that I'll never use. At least I got paid for it.

Wow! Pretty soon you'll be starting residency two weeks before you graduate if this trend keeps up. This catches on and maybe you'll start the day after match day in 5 years. 😱

I think we started orientation on the 12th.
