So I'm in the process of scheduling my fourth year now and I was hoping to take some significant time off to travel, but might now have the vacation time due to time off for boards, interviews, etc.

Just wondering when most residency programs actually start. I've heard most start in July, but I figure there is some orientation time that might be in June. My school's graduation is during the third week of may, so I was hoping to have a good chunk in June to travel.

Anyone care to chime in with ideas of what I should anticipate? Thanks!

orientation and starting days vary, but i think you'd be safe if you were back in town by june 15.

I'll offer our residency program schedule:

Transitionals start and finish a week earlier than other programs to allow for travel to PGY-2 location. IM and OB/GYN start on the last Monday in June (this year, June 29), all others on July 1. Residents arrive one week prior to start date for ACLS, paperwork, and orientation - residents are paid for this.

As a follow up question, when do you get your first paycheck? I'm a bit concerned about making ends meet on my loans....

Depends on the program.

From previous responses here, there are some programs that pay you monthly so you don't get a check until August.

Others pay you bi-monthly, so you will get a check around July 15 (although it will only be for one week's work since payroll goes in the week before the checks are issued).

thanks everyone. if anyone else wants to post there schedule that would be cool.

I could use a good three months before residency I think....
