hi everyone,

this may be a stupid question, but on approximately what date does residency usually start? is it early july or late june? and we absolutely HAVE to take step 2 before starting, right?

thanks!!

Step II is a requirement at most residency programs or for med school graduation, and residencies officially start on July 1st, but some of them have orientation 1-2 weeks prior to July 1st.

Almost all my programs start June 24, with orientation approximately a week before (I have heard anywhere from June 14-18.)

It might depend on the specialty. You may call around casually or anonymously to some of your programs you have applied to, and just ask them.

Oh, but in addition to that, the interns get the last week of the year "off" as vacation. They just do it that way so that everyone isn't new at the same time.

As for step 2, I know we had to take it to graduate med school - and of course, also to start residency! I have heard of some programs wanting results around match time - before they actually match the applicant. You may want to check this out.
