When is it appropriate to call a school and inquire about your status after your interview? During the interview they indicated that it would take 2 weeks, which was yesterday. I have been offered a position but am anxiously waiting to hear back from my first choice. Also, if I am offered a position there then I will decline further interviews. How long should I wait to call them AFTER waiting the informed period?

Thanks!

My take is that you already having an offer changes things a bit. Normally, a day after their soft two-week deadline might be seen as somewhat antsy. However, another school is waiting to hear back from you, so I'd say it's reasonable to call the first-choice program now, let them know you're holding an offer, and see if they have any updated information to offer you.

I agree. It's absolutely reasonable to call places you haven't heard from if you have an offer.

Slightly different question...

I know i have to be away for a certain 3 day period in March for a conference. I have yet to hear back from one of my top programs about interviews (I know they havent sent any yet) and want to make sure their interviews won't be during that time frame before booking flights.

Can I call them to ask when their interviews will be or is that inappropriate?

Thanks!

I would say it is definitely ok to call in this situation. I had to email a POI (who I had already been in contact with) about interviews at one point because I had an invite for the the same weekend and needed to make travel plans and it was completely fine. I would just mention that you know they still have some time but you are making sure it doesn't conflict with something else on your end. Good luck!

Or it would be easy and pretty anonymous to call the graduate secretary and ask the question. No need to bother the POI.

Oy, now I'm in the process of taking my own advice. Received an offer for a postdoc yesterday, and now I have to try to obtain information from my other (likely better fit) programs, both of which I haven't interviewed for yet. Yikes!
