Similar to many of you, I will have to take out loans to finance my education. When exactly is the deadline to submit the paperwork to the school? What happens if you miss the deadline?

As in the FAFSA? ASAP is recommended, but you can fill it out anytime before you get your loans. Schools will usually tell you if they have a deadline. If you miss the deadline, there will be a delay on getting your loans.

Yes, I believe the FAFSA. (This is my first time qualifying for student loads so excuse the "obvious" questions). So if school starts in August, can I file in say July and be ok?

That might be cutting it close because they still have to process it, but that might be ok. I would call the school and ask. Is there a reason you haven't filled it out yet? It doesn't take very long.

I would get the FAFSA done ASAP. You will very likely be late on loan disbursement if you do it in July. Once you're late, you can incur extra fees on top of tuition

in case you did not know you can file w/ FAFSA before you know where you are definitively going

I would do it as soon as you can. For example, Michigan's deadline for receiving the FAFSA is April 30th. Not sure what would happen if someone missed their school's deadline, but it's better to not deal with that.

Hard deadline for 2017-18 is June 30, 2018. But if you need federal student loans to pay for school, then you should complete your FAFSA and any additional school requirements ASAP.
