Hello Everyone,

I am now in the process of applying to US medical schools from Canada. I am almost done with my application, I only need the LOR's and the MCAT scores to be sent out (around September 10th). However I cannot meet with my referees to request the forms until school starts in mid September. My question is, would it be too late to have the the LOR's sent at the end of September (When is the deadline)? Also, can I submit my primary application before the LOR's have been sent?

Thank you for your help.

i think you are already kind of too late in the cycle esp if you havent submitted a primary yet..

The official date by which letters are due varies from school to school (anywhere from November to December I think is the norm) and you can find that information on their website. However, as ar said, the medical school application process is one that favors the people who submit early, so submitting now when many have been submitting since June 1 is going to put you behind a lot of people, which is bad when interviews (and therefore acceptances) are given on a first-come-first-serve basis. By all means go ahead and submit, give it a go, but be prepared with a plan B that will allow you to submit on June 1 next year just in case.

Also, definitely send in your primary immediately and don't wait for the LORs.

So I can actually submit it before the MCAT scores are released? Because I have been advised differently before, I have been told that they will not even look at the application if the MCAT scores are not available.

It's true that schools won't look at your application until the MCAT score is made available. However, right now, it is taking several weeks to have your application verified. In the interim while you wait for your MCAT score to be released, you can at least have your application verified and sent to schools; the schools won't look at it until they have your score, but at least then you won't STILL be waiting on the verification process.

and youll start getting secondaries too if you submit now

I see, thanks for the help. So just to make sure, I still did not create any, or printed out, any LOR's, if I submit my application today can I still return to it and create the LOR's or will the system lock me out from doing this?

I'm pretty sure you can add letters later; however, seeing as I didn't have to do that, you might want to check with someone else just to make sure.

You can add more LORs even after you AMCAS is verified and sent out to schools, in which case, AMCAS sends the LORs separately to the schools u designate.

Another thing u may want to consider is submitting ur AMCAS with only a couple of schools u're confident about THEN when ur MCAT is out, u add the rest of the schools. Once u add a school and hit submit, u can't change that specific school selection (no deletions/substitutions), therefore it's important to let you MCAT help guide ur school selection.
