  1. Pre-Health (Field Undecided)
Hey everyone!

I’m currently a student at Samuel Merritt University (SMU), and I wanted to share something that might help anyone out there staring down the med/dental/PA/pod school application process like it’s a boss battle. SMU just launched a new Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences (MSBS) program for Fall 2025, and since I’ve been helping get the word out (student by day, unpaid solo-hype team by night), I thought I’d pass it along for anyone looking to beef up their app or reboot their pre-health journey.

Program Overview:

  • 1-year, full-time hybrid or fully online format
  • Medical school–style coursework: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Histology, Cell Biology, Neuroscience
  • Optional integrated MCAT prep
  • Personalized advising and application support
  • Taught by faculty who also teach in SMU’s DPM, DPT, PA, and nursing programs

Who It’s For:

  • Pre-health students seeking academic enhancement
  • Career changers or non-traditional students
  • Anyone applying to graduate health programs who wants to demonstrate readiness

Added Opportunities:

  • Affiliations with several dental and medical (DO) schools that may offer interview opportunities to qualified students
  • Pathway to SMU’s PA and DPM programs, including interview consideration and tuition discounts for eligible students

I also want to add that mentorship really matters to me, and the faculty leading this program are honestly the best I’ve had in my entire academic career. I’d send an email at 2am and—no joke—they’d reply by 2:05am. 😂

If you have any questions, feel free to reply or DM me. I'm happy to share what I know as a current student—especially since many of the same professors who taught me during my didactic years are now leading this new master’s program.

Anyways, here's the website: Master of Biomedical Sciences

I really hope this helps anyone looking for a solid post-bacc or academic enhancer option!

Please I am very interested. Can you tell me more about the classes and curriculum, how rigorous and I learn there is a final Comprehensive exam?

Hi! I am actually part of this program, and I can tell you more about it. I am currently taking 13 credits this Fall semester, and I will take 13 credits in the Spring Semester. In the summer, I will also take around 9 credits, which will be all the credits I need to graduate.
Classes are pretty rigorous, I would say do not expect it to be an easy program, but if you put the work in, it is definitely doable. Professors are also amazing, and they will help if we need anything from them.
For the comprehensive exam, yes, you are correct, there is one at the end of the program, which will include questions from all the core classes taken, you need to take that exam to graduate.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I am also attending SMU’s BMS program and its honestly helped me a lot on my dental school track!
I had a low GPA in my undergrad and being able to prove that I am capable of going to professional school in this program is so rewarding. You will have to put in the time and effort, however the program will still allow you to be completely online. IT is not an easy program but the professors are there to help!
