Hi
I have question about prelim and transitional year resident.
During there rotations in PGY-1, do they get a chance to interview for advanced position in Nov-Jan? Or they have to wait until after finishing PGY-1 and interview next year

Thanks

If you don't have an advanced or categorical spot, your prelim/transitional year program probably is aware of the likelihood you to need to do some interviewing to secure another spot. But you are going to generally be expected to use vacation days, post-call days, etc for this, and I wouldn't expect the residency to make it particularly easy.

Some programs make it easier than others do. My program (an osteopathic TRI) was nice enough to give us a few extra days off just for interviewing (though I did the majority of my interviews using vacation time).
If I were you, I'd ask the prog coordinator once you know where you matched at if you can be scheduled for rotations where it will be easier to take time off for interviews during the interview season. Ideally rotations where you can take vacation and won't have call (because trying to attend interviews while post call would be logistically a nightmare). Good luck!

As others have said it largely depends on your program. If you find yourself in this situation let the program know right away and hopefully they can work with you to schedule lighter rotations with flexible vacation during interview months.
