When should I quit my scribe job...?

I want to go overseas to visit family specifically between mid-Feb to mid-March. My grandmother may be displaying pre-Alzheimer behaviors I am told and my cousins that I rarely see from Europe are also coming. I am pretty committed to visiting specifically during this time as a result. However, I start med school in mid July. If I quit me scribe job (they did not approve my request to have mid-Feb to mid-March off because it is on short notice and long--both true) and return in mid March, I will have around 3 months with my only commitment being two separate research activities I am doing at the local hospital (maybe a total f 16 hrs a week, all volunteer). This gap in space concerns me--I don't like being idle, and admittedly, I have been plenty idle since I have only worked 300 hrs total since starting in mid November. I can start looking for a job to have in place when I return but the market in my city does not seem that friendly. With that mind, I was alternatively thinking of quitting at the end of March, go visit overseas all April and then come back stateside. I am going to quit no matter what by June if I did nothing.

So basically I don't really know what to do. I don't like the thought of quitting my job without giving my employer that much--if any--notice. My friend currently in med school or scribe for another company basically told me to not feel guilty. Scribe turnover is high to begin with which I know as well. I know this seems as such an insignificant problem, but I just want to hear some anonymous thoughts anyways!

(As for the scribe job, it's alright. Not as much learning as I thought. Still enjoy it, but how much of it that will translate to med school and skills as well I am not sure it will be that much tbh)
 
Why not just give them your two weeks notice now? That's pretty standard and is definitely enough time for your employer. I wouldn't worry about finding something to fill those 3 months right now. It'll be a good break before school starts.

Yeah, I actually get my February schedule tomorrow. I think if my schedule is not good, I will give the notice. My brother just suggested that I should ask for leave of absence although not necessarily beaus I am ill, but because of my family.
 
Are you employed through a large scribe company? As a Chief Scribe at a larger company, I would MUCH rather you take a leave of absence or give at least 6 weeks notice of quitting. It takes sooooooo much time to find someone new with interviewing, training, etc.
 
I'm actually in a similar situation myself, though I don't have a family matter that's making me want to take time off. Frankly, I've been a Chief Scribe for almost 2 years and just want to enjoy my last summer off. I'll probably be resigning in March (currently training my replacement). I feel a little guilty but I think we could both use the break prior to school to do things we want to do!
 
Need to learn that these places don't care about you and you don't owe them anything. If you want to be courteous, give them 2 weeks, but if you actually want to work those 2 weeks, don't. I've quit jobs before where i've had good relations with everyone by saying "I'm putting my 2 weeks notice" and they've flat out told me "no, you can just not come again tomorrow."
 
Well, thankfully my employer gave me a leave of absence for about a month. I generally agree about scribe companies and whatnot, but I enjoy the job as a part time and I still have amply time of leisure. Turns out it all worked out!
