Hey guys, I'm a US FMG 3rd year student planning my 4th year rotations and I'm in a situation where I don't end my 3rd year core rotations (last one is Surgery) until middle of August. Which means I plan on taking a month off for Step 2 CK and taking it mid September to get my scores back by mid October.

I had heard you should do your audition electives and Sub-i's ASAP in 4th year. Is this true and why is that? When do you think I should do my away elective and IM Sub-i? I have a chance to do my IM Sub-i at a decent hospital but they don't have anything until January 2013. Would it be too late to do this? When should you do away/audition electives until?

Any other advice is much appreciated. I know its near impossible but I'm trying to get an away elective at a So Cal university so I'd have a shot at getting an IM spot there. For reference I got a 99 on step1 and have 2 publications in Cards so far, working on a 3rd (in rads). Still haven't gotten my IM core grade back yet.

99 doesnt mean anything...it's pretty much a mean score. what's the 3 digit score

I did my sub-I before I took my CK exam and really appreciated that I had the forced medicine review before I took the test. I would also suggest doing it early enough in the year that it will show up on your ERAS transcript, because even though I did mine in August, the woman who does the grading was backlogged and my grade wasn't in until after transcripts were uploaded. I did have people ask about it on the interview trail and ended up sending them copies of my updated transcript if they requested it.

For IMGs, California requires a postgraduate training authorization letter ("PTAL") to apply for residency, and one of the requirements to obtain this letter is a copy of a medical diploma. Since you're still a 3rd year student, and applying for residency before you graduate (like most others), you'd be ineligible to apply for residency in California. See here:

Also, make sure your medical school is recognized by the Medical Board of California:

I'm pretty sure you don't need the PTAL to apply for residencies but you do need it before you start. Otherwise no FMG would be able to get Cali residencies who're still in med school and that just simply isn't the case. Regardless, my school matches people in california every year.

You need the PTAL letter or the receipt showing that the application is in process (if you haven't graduated)

Do your sub-i immediately after surg and as above posters said it can be a good review of step2 material and then take a month off for your step 2. You will still get a lot of good interviews with your 233 but make sure you do well on sub-i (i.e. get H) and better your step 1 score.
good luck
