When would you recommend Thermacare (would acetaminophen or ibuprofen be better options for pain?), Icy Hot, Primatene, and Bronkaid?

When would you recommend Thermacare (would acetaminophen or ibuprofen be better options for pain?), Icy Hot, Primatene, and Bronkaid?

Thermacare: All of the time. Especially if you are dealing with muscle spasm. It delivers heat to the area and allows the patient to function w/o being tethered to a heating pad.

Primatene, and Bronkaid: Never under any circumstances.

Acetaminophen/Ibuprofen: Depends on the patient's age/medical history and reason for the pain.

Icy Hot & other External Analgesics: Rarely.

Patient preference shapes how you recommend these things sometimes. If a pt with some aches prefers to use something "natural," (ie, not a pill - though I wonder why they come into a drugstore in the 1st place), I may recommend a topical product.

Thermacare: I am guy that has some back problems and I think this product is crap. I have used it a few times and it is not near as effective as a heating pad. I suppose their is no harm in trying it so I would have no problem recommending it.

Primatene, and Bronkaid: Primatene I agree, never under any circumstances. Bronkaid is not terrible. It has straight ephedrine and guaifensin so depending on the patient not a bad option.

Acetaminophen/Ibuprofen: Agreed, it all depends on the patient's age/medical history and reason for the pain.

Icy Hot & other External Analgesics: Rarely. If I do I make sure I expain explain how it works. I also stress never to use with a heating pad. I have had two elderly patients come to the pharmacy in the last month with chemical burns from using icy hot and a heating pad. It was bad.
