Is it too late to do it now? Most people I know did it last month before Christmas Break. My school never had any big emails, and I probably missed the get together thing for it.

Do it now.
The only issue you have to deal with is availability of seats at the testing center of your choice. You have to realize that the prometric testing centers serve other students other than medical students and there are a finite number of seats per test day for the various tests that they administer.The closer it gets to the date you want,the less likely you are to get that date and the more likely you are to either have to travel to another site that has an open spot or choose a later date
