When to research IHS/CHCs/USPHS

So I have the NHSC scholarship, and am considering pretty much all of my options: CHC, IHS, USPHS, working in a prison, for ICE, etc.

So those of you that have experience, when should I start trying things out? I know that COSTEP would allow me to do a rotation w/ IHS, and possibly a couple of other things (depending on how strapped for funds they are), and there are probably other things I could do to get a feel for my choices during 4th year.

Is that useful at all?

Do you feel that where you were for residency made any difference in where you ended up?

yes i do think this would be helpful. Just realized that not all IHS facilities are created equal. The leadership and the region has a lot to do with it. Also, ther many different type of experience hospital vs clinic experience.
