When to send letter

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Warning: pure conjecture ahead.

I sent mine today. I know that programs certify their rank lists weeks before the deadline to avoid any website problems, and with the last interviews nationally occuring last week and just a few stragglers this week, I would imagine most programs are holding their ranking meetings very soon, probably this week. You would obviously want to send your letter before your top program's residency selection committee meets. I guess the dilemma then becomes when to time your letter for maximum impact. I doubt that it's detrimental to send it early - programs are usually pretty good about keeping communication from you in your file, and I think what we perceive as the emotional impact of a well-timed letter is probably overrated for these busy programs that receive lots of communication from a large applicant pool.

SO, my advice is to go ahead and send your #1 email. I think it can only help you, and you don't want to miss the boat.

Soon. Most places have their ranking meeting shortly after their last interview day.

When is the ideal time to send the "I'm ranking you number 1" letter, and should it say anything else? Yes, I know I'm being neurotic. Please answer my question anyway 🙂

Early February is best. Make sure you and the program are completely done interviewing.

Most programs have a running rank list, and interviewees move up or down during the interview season.

Based on some sleuthing done in the IM forum. It looks like tarlovcyst is not what he claims to me, so I wouldn't be trusting his advice.

For your information, this account was made by one of my medical students, who happens to be my son.

I guess I should make my own account... Will get to it in the near future.

Update: DoctorBagel, that is some nice detective work. 🙂

Hmm...too late to send one of these letters at this point? Will it just serve to make me look out of touch with things?

Dont think it matters if too late. If you dont send one and you dont match #1 you will always wonder "what if i sent a letter".

at least now you can wonder "what if i sent a letter sooner" haha
