When do we need to submit ERAS in order to be considered early? I have heard both 9/1 and 9/15 being tossed around.

9/1 was every year UNTIL this year. The deadline was changed for this cycle.
It cannot be submitted and programs cannot download anything until 09/15. That said, some programs begin downloading apps right away, so it's a good idea to submit it right on the 15th.

Do we have to do anything on 9/1? For some reason I thought we had to apply to NRMP for match eligibility (https://services.nrmp.org/r3/home/login/login.cfm)

You can register for the match Sept 1. But you just have to do that at some point, it's not urgent.
(ERAS and the match are separate. Weird, no?)
