You don't need to provide your green card number in AMCAS, but you need your SSN. Some school might need you to send a copy of your green card during 2nd application.

Hi guys,
I am applying this June and my green card won't be available until August so I just wonder if I have to submit any proof at all regarding my immigration status when I apply in June? Is it ok if I put down permanent resident in the primary application now? I am pretty sure that by the time I submit my secondaries I will officially be a green card holder. Thanks a lot for your help.

I'm not sure what you are supposed to do, but I think I came across it in the AMCAS booklet: http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/start.htm

Click on AMCAS 2010 instruction book in the upper right hand corner of the page. In addition, you can contact AMCAS...they are good at responding to inquiries.

If you are currently going through the application process to obtain your permanent resident card (green card), you are not considered permanent resident until you receive the card. You can refer to page 35 of the AMCAS 2010 instructions (http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/amcas2010instructions080409.pdf) for more information on this.

Thanks a lot for the info guys. Is it possible to adjust your immigration status after I receive my green card? I really do not want them to put my application to the bottom of the list because of this.

I would not lie (ie, if you don't have it, don't put down you do have it). However, an email explaining you're anticipating getting it soon might be in order and an update as soon as you get it. also, contact AMCAS, they're quick at getting back to you, but they'll probably tell you not to put it down unless you have it. Congrats on being close to getting your permanent residency

Hey man, assuming that you already have received your Social Security Number, Green Card is not a problem. When you entered the US for the first time, the immigration people should have put down number on your passport which starts with A 123456789 ..... That actually your Green Card No. You can put that in application and things might work out

Thank you so much for your advice. Where do you suggest I send that email explaining my immigration status? To the schools I'm applying to? Again, is it possible to update your status after the application is submitted? I have to admit I feel really tempted to put down that I already have it since it's like a guarantee but you are absolutely right; I should not take a chance with this.

I'd email the schools you apply to and I'd mail AMCAS asking if you can update your status.

I am pretty sure you are not allowed to change your citizen/immigration status on the AMCAS once submitted because I sort of had similar issues, because I was in the process of getting my citizenship and received it in August after I submitted AMCAS and read specifically that you cannot change that section. However, are you just waiting to get your actual card or are you still waiting on the application approval? I know there's a lag of a couple of months between getting approval and receiving the card. If you already have approval and are only waiting to receive the card, I would go ahead and put down that you are permanent resident, but if you are waiting to get your application approved still, there's gonna be a even longer wait to get your physical card, then I would not risk that because many schools ask you to send a copy of the card itself and some even ask you to bring the card in for the interview. You don't want to be caught in that situation. That said, whether or not the permanent resident status is important really depends on your stats, if you have a 40MCAT/4.0, then you will probably get into a top 10 school where international applicants are treated the same, but if you are not a stellar applicant, with a 3.7/35MCAT, I would say the green card is pretty important, because I know from this cycle's personal experience, that many private schools like Rochester, Upitts, etc, do not even consider internationals. good luck.

My green card is sort of "pre-approved" because the Immigration officer told me I only need to give him an important missing paperwork and he will approve my case. It's just that the document won't be available until August. And no I don't have a 4.0/40 (how many of those are there anyway? They are the outliners in statistic) 😀 so green card matters.

My top choice of school is Tufts and USC both are private. Do they care if I'm international? If they don't then I think I will apply to all the private schools in my list and then when the green card comes in, apply for the public ones.

Please guys, I appreciate any input. I really need help on this. Thanks a lot.

From the MSAR, it doesn't look like Tufts is very International friendly: Only 1/178 matriculated.

USC=?South Carolina=0/83 or ?Southern California=6/159.

Is that stat = number of internationals accepted/total number of accepted? If it is then it's not telling since we do not know how many internationals applied. I am just curious about their policy. Do private schools treat internationals the same as US citizens?
