Hey guys. If you have read any of the pre-dental posts than you prolbably noticed that I just decided to be pre-dental my senior year in college. Now here is my problem. I am just going to start taking my pre-reqs, and will also take BOTH summer sessions to speed up the process. So here is my question to you. When should I aim to take the test, and how long should it take me to finsh all pre-reqs? I am plan on taking chem I/II the summer of 2005. Then Fall 2005 I plan on taking Orgo/Phys, and then Orgo and Phys spring 2006.

I have a little discrepency with the current bio class that I took because it is not a "series" bio class but just a regular bio class although it is 4 hours and did include a lab, I have no clue whether or not it will count. If you think you can help me out with this please check my outher thread about this in the pre-dental forum, I would really appreciate it...

So assuming I do get credit for the bio, and take bio II this coming semester Spring 2005. When should I take/start studying heavily for this exam assuming I want to go ASAP and start dental school no longer than 2007. What do you guys is this reasonable? How does my plan sound? Please make comments/suggestions, and I apologize for such a long thread.

I also took a accelerated version of the prereqs to get into dental school. I Decieded at the end of freshman year I wanted to be a dentist and I got accepted into dental school my junior year. You should start studying for the DAT during your winter break after fall 2005. You should consider taking the DAT the summer of 2006 and apply then as well. BEst of luck

wait so are you saying send the applications in before I get my DAT score? I plan to study summer 2006 and to take the DAT in late august or september. Is that a bad idea?

Whats up JohnDoe,
I was actually in a VERY similar situation as you, deciding to go into dentistry in my senior year of college. I graduated May '04 and by that time, I was able to take 2 bio classes w/lab and physics I w/lab. During the summer session AFTER GRADUATION I took Chem I and II. I just finished taking Org I and physics II this fall. Instead of waiting till next year to apply/take the DATs, I figured I might as well try to get in to school for the class of '09 somewhere. I got all of my letters of rec. and completed my application by the end of this past summer (before even taking Organic chem at all.) I then took my DAT in October, basically teaching most of organic to myself. I did ok, getting an 18 AA and a 18 sci. I interviewed at NYU and have interview at Nova coming up. Basically the point of this post is to let you know that if you want to, you can apply for the next admissions cycle and at least give yourself a chance. You never know. I am retaking the DAT in January and hope to do much better now that organic will be a little easier! Good luck!

It is by far more important to get your application in early than getting your DAT taken early (i.e. spring). It takes AADSAS at least six weeks to turn your application around. It takes school just a couple of days to receive your DAT scores as they can download them almost as soon as you have taken them. Furthermore AADSAS does NOT want your DAT scores - you can imput them on your application but schools wait for an official copy. I submitted my application on June 1st and took the DAT on July 2nd - some schools had my DAT scores long before my application. Trust me, doing so isn't cutting it late - I went to a slew of interviews and have several acceptances to my name. In my opinion utilizing the 6+ weeks it will take AADSAS to work on your application towards studying for the DAT is a great way to go as that test is a doozy!

Thanks everyone. Another question. I can send in my application even before I finish the last pre-req for pre-med correct? Will that give them problems in terms of calculating my science GPA?

You don't need all the prerequistes when you apply, but you must complete the courses by the end of the spring semester in the application cycle. Make sure to take your DAT around spring so that you can give yourself a three month period in case you have to retake it. I didn't really have that opportunity and it was a one shot deal when I took it in September so I had a lot of pressure on me. Most importantly, turn your application in early even if you take your DAT after. Good luck

take DAT during Spring if you are not so sure you will kick axx

take DAT during Summer if you know you will kick axx

dont worry about your pre-req, all you need to do is to put on the app. that you will be taking certain classes in summer, fall, etc.

send apps early like Spryover said it takes 6weeks and DAT takes only like 2weeks for the schools to file it.

as long as you are applying before august i think you will be in good shape.
good luck
