My godness thsi is torture waiting day after, jumping on the mail guy daily just for a piece of paper that helps determine the rest of our lives. I applied to four schools, I've interview in all of them yet no one can make a decision on my file until they receive my OATs. & wow they are taking a very long time!!!

Last year, my scores came in the week after my finals week. Specifically, I believe that was around the second week of December. Don't stress about it too much. I'm sure since you have interviews lined up, your scores will come out fine, and all will be well. Have a great Turkey day!

I can totally relate to you. I am so anxious waiting for my scores. I have applied to only 3 schools and I have 2 interviews set up. My grades are strong so I think I will get into school as long as my OAT scores are okay. I am just really worried that I bombed the quantative reasoning section. Does anyone know how much emphasis schools place on the quantative reasoning section? I would think that they would care more about our total science score. Also, I have done well in every math class I have taken since high school, it was just that the last time I took a test without a calculator was probably in 5th grade.

I wouldn't worry too much about how you think you did on the quantative section. Most people agree, that section is the toughest on the test. The math itself isn't too hard, it's just the time factor that gets most people. I don't know for sure, but as long as all of your sections are generally above a 300 or around that zone, the schools you are applying to should be happy. I don't believe that any section is looked at more than another. Some schools may look at your science scores more, but that's really it. Once more, don't worry about it too much. I'm sure you did fine on the section, as well as the rest of the test. Good luck with all the interviews!

hey..at least you guys have interviews!!!!
just wondering.. is it reasonable to ask a professor for a reference BEFORE the term is over?? hehe.. or does it occur normally AFTER the term is done?

<OAT scores in around 2 weeks?> =)

Katalio

Hey Katalio,

wondering the same thing about academic references here too! What a pain, seems like profs at Waterloo are either awful people without personality you would never want to speak too (and may not even speak / write English!! I'm Serious :| ) or I got a mediocre mark in their course. Actually, the only profs I ever spoke with were in my first year... so long ago now. Whats it like at your uni (UBC?)?

But seriously, you should start kissing *ss ASAP!! And you should probably let them know of your intentions shortly thereafter and give them about 5 weeks to complete you letters.

Guess its time for me to heed my own advice :$

Hey jefguth:

at UBC... hmm... therz around 150 - 200 ppl in my classes, Prof ALWAYS ask you to ask question IN CLASS (and no..they wont' know you), we have around 2-3 prof teaching 1 term because each prof has their own specialty..so the prof usually teaches around 1 month. (in which you can't really communicate with them). Some other classes they suggest you to post your Q's on the bulletin board then other students will answer it.. etc etc... they have TA's to help you out..but try not to disturb the profs! Lol.. but then some profs are pretty nice...
I 'm currently working/volunteering for 1 prof.. so that's only 1 letter. But as for the other one / two.. I have no idea.. I plan to just wing it and ask!
any advices?

So crappy that our schools don't have Pre-Health Committee!! -__-

Oh Wow!

Sounds like things are a little bit nicer at UBC. I'd say about half the profs here are not interested in students questions at all... they just try to rush through the lecture as fast as possible while cramming it will as much info as they can. However, I have had a couple of really nice profs that actually want students to come and visit them in their offices but that is rare. And biology classes are scary, usually 350-400 ppl - math is usually the smallest but no less than 75.

I have no idea what to do about the last letter, just ask around I guess. How did you end up volunteering for your prof? What do you do, work in a lab?

I've actually been wondering if a group of students might be able to compel the faculty of science to create a Pre-Health Commitee.... But, I need letters now...

C'est la vie!

Isn?t it easier to ask a professor from a class which you have already taken?

But like you said..the term is over so prof wouldn't even remember you (unless you chat with them everyday last yr). Besides, my classes last term were a bit odd.. I had this course with 5 profs!! So I dunno..

jefguth: wow..in a way I'm lucky that I"m not in Waterloo! lol.. I got my volunteernig through asking the prof that has taught me biophyiscal chem. But we need more than 1 reference for a lot of schools... so......
Anyone knows if Post-Doc 's are okay as well?

letters from the Post-Doc should be just fine!

Why doesnt ASCO or Opted or whoever post the scores online or at least have a date of when they are mailing out??

I hate the wait, I would rather not know my score during finals week.

I agree, the wait really sucks...dental people get to know their scores the same day, and we have to wait ssoooooo long. What sucks more is that we find out our scores right before finals, and then some of us will have to stress about re-taking the exam in February...

the anticipation is getting to me.. ARGHH!!!!....

I probably need to retake during feb. sigh..

😱 ... this is insane... this waiting is getting to me... i keep havng nightmares of all types of scores... i cant even sleep anymore just here waiting.... & now that Thanksgiving is over is even worste cause you know they are coming but you dont know went....(btw i hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving holiday) dentals get the same day but they dont curve their test so i guess we are lucky in that sense....
as soon as anyone here something let us know
thanks

Just out of curiousity....which school offers interviews without receiving an OAT score first?? Dude, I'm stressing my butt off here too because I have no clue what to do with myself next semester until I figure out my future!!

If I remember correctly, I received my OAT scores about this week last year.

I think you might be able to call optometry schools to see if they have received October scores yet, since schools usually receive them before the test-takers.

For those who will take the OAT's in the future, my interviewer at ICO (Dr. Colip) said that there will be an electronic version of the exam available in the near future. This will allow you to receive your scores as soon as you submit your final question. I think information about this will be posted on opted.org soon.

"Information about the availability of a computerized version of the OAT will be posted on this site on December 15, 2004. Check back then for more details." (from Online Registration for OAT on opted.org)

honestly, i dont think a computerized version would be a good idea. When i work problems, i want to underline things and circle things, especially in the reading comp part. It makes it a lot more efficient. Unless they have computer screens with writing tablets(where u can write on the screen), i think the paper version is the best way.

PCO and Nova are the ones i know of. maybe more, not sure

But then after you submit the final question and get your score, wouldn't they still need to standardize it and give u a score out of 400?

I know that PCO and SCO grants interviews without OAT scores. I recently got a provisional acceptance from PCO. They are waiting for my OAT scores!!

SUNY and New England also offer interviews before receiving OAT scores. I was offered a provisional acceptance to SUNY after my interview, so they are just waiting for my scores

I had interviews for PCO, ICO, NOVA & OHIO STATE before my oats score....
I know NEW ENGLANDO doesnt interview without scores... good luck!

Just to add -- SUNY does interviews pre-scores.

Pacific gives interviews without OAT scores too. I have a provisional acceptance too (yay!!). Here's to crossing my fingers that the OAT scores come out ok...

think they'll come tomorrow?? ;-)

Do schools invite you for an interview thru Mail, Email? or phone?
