Okay, this is probably lame, but when you're filling out secondaries online, and you need to italicize the name of a book, piece of art, etc., what do you do? Use quotations? Because that's technically incorrect, but it's at least some kind of acknowledgement on your part that you know you're supposed to do something with a title. So, what to do? 😳

technically incorrect? Haven't they been using quotations for italic-situations with the advent of the type-writer?

I thought with a typewriter you would type out the title and go back with an underscore and underline(?).

Yeah I think you're right. I've been wondering this myself too.

You are so right about the underscore. It is underline, not quotes. (Oy, I'm having flashbacks to all of those books about proper quotations). But anyway, on standard forms that allow no modification, I've been putting poster titles, etc., in quotes.

There is almost a 100% certainty that no one gives a damn if you use quotes or underlines. Over time, you'll eventually learn what sort of things you need to agonize over, and what sort of things aren't worth a fart in the wind.

Heh, well obviously, but it is an interesting discussion about the history of quotation marks, italics, and the ilk.

If there was a quick, easy alternative, it wouldn't be a big deal. 😉

I think as long as you acknowledge that there needs to be some type of reference to a title or whatever it should be fine. Like if you said:

The book, titled "Seinlanguage" by Jerry Seinfeld, was my favorite book of all time.

I think that would be ok, they know italics are not available so they can't expect you to underline or italics.
