When you found out you got rejected by your top choice, how did you react?

I stared at the ceiling on my bed for two hours. A very reflective time. Alas, **** my life.

Did you at least get an II? If so...I guess reflect on the experience and try to improve on any other IIs you have. I know I messed up on one of mine 2 weeks ago...was so anxious and nervous.

Still waiting for that II. But have written it off emotionally. It is dead to me, unless it sends me a II.

Yeah, Hosp. I'm sorry they rejected you, but you have to keep in mind that the acceptance rate for all schools is in the single digits.

You can be an outstanding applicant, have research, the MCAT scores, and the grades required for admission based off MSAR and still get no II and/or no acceptance letter.

It's just the nature of the application process.

The point of the whole thing is to proper training to become a medical doctor--not to get to wear your favorite school's sweatshirt around as an attendee. Wherever you go to medical school in the United States, you're going to get the shot at becoming whatever doctor you want to be! No one truly cares where you went to med school in the states, so let the good times roll and put your game face on for your next II.

And if the school where you do get in isn't as highly ranked, isn't your favorite location, or is even hated by you, then you're only there for 4 years! Ace your boards, destroy your clerkships, and put yourself in a situation where you'd be a good candidate to go back to your favorite school for residency!

PS

Should be obvious but.. when you start day 1 of med school wherever you are, be friendly as f$(k and never mention that you "wish you were somewhere else". It will make you look like a giant butthole. Be happy with where you are, wherever that is, and enjoy med school when you get there. It's going to be inredibl(y hard and will make you want to roll over and die all the time)e.

I haven't gotten rejected from my "top choice" yet but after interviewing there I found that there were other schools that I got a much better gut feeling from and were overall much more impressive. I hope this will be the same for you.

You bet. More than once.
O-M-G. Were these people that actually interviewed, or random applicants that just showed up on the first day of school trying to blend in like no one would notice.

Only applicants who had not interviewed have required a court order (so far).

This is amazing,
It's usually sad, sometimes scary.
We had a guy e-mail us this year to let us know he had turned down Hopkins for us and wanted to know when and where orientation would be.

I guess the caliber of applicants you have usually are not attuned to failure. Perhaps diversify the class to include some major screw ups like me!

This would make for some fascinating case histories on psychiatry!!

Bought a pack of cigarettes (I don't smoke), lighted one, coughed like crazy, and threw away the pack.

And then I listened to some depressing music, ordered a pizza, watched a movie, slept, woke up next morning feeling depressed AF.
