Where are you applying?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Penn, Colorado, Illinois, North Carolina and Tufts. VMCAS and Col. and UIUC supplementals are in, still working on the Tufts app. 🙂 Penn's my in-state so my hopes are there!

Penn only. After moving to Philly just a year ago I wouldn't realistically pick up my bags and move elsewhere, not right now anyway. I may apply to other schools next year; if I don't get into Penn this year.

so why do you folks want to go to penn?

I have a bunch of reasons for Penn. First off, Im a PA resident, so not only is it my best chance, but the main campus in Philly is an hour from home, and the New Bolton Center is 1 1/2 hours from home. I toured there this summer and absolutely loved it! The New Bolton Center and the Kennet Square area are both gorgeous and the NBC itself is undergoing renovations to be in sync with the lastest technologies and biosecurity protocols. The main campus itself, while Im not a huge fan of the city, is in a fairly safe area (compared to some) and was really nice, especially when you take into consideration that they are building a new teaching and reasearch building that I *believe* they said would be opening for next year (so what will hopefully be our class *fingers crossed*). I am a big fan of their large caseloads, especially large animal as I'm planning on entering the equine field. The NBC also has a great reputation among local horse people that I have worked with and the Philly campus and the school in general got raving reviews from the vet I've worked for, a Penn alum.

After stumbling onto Penn's program no other school compared. It is a whole package thing. The way that they select students is unusual in the fact that they look at the entire application, not just your GPA. That have a well balanced interest in there school, students, and the medicine their alumni practice. That says a lot. I am also attracted to their caseload and location. When I mentioned Penn to my husband I enticed him with the thought of living in a big city. I have always loved the northeast and some things about Cornell and Tufts are just not for me. I decided to focus on Penn because I am at a point in my life which I am tired of settling. It is just my luck that the perfect program for me happens to be at an Ivy League school which obviously gets a lot of applicants. I hope everyone gets into the school of their choice (and I hope Penn gets an unusually low amount of applicants this year so we all get in)
P.S. The new teaching and research facility will be in use when we get there.
Current students are kind of jealous because the current facilities they are using aren't in the greatest shape.

Hey Guys,
Just wanted to let you know that I actually attend Penn and if you guys have any questions, I can try to answer them. The new building does open in August 2006 I believe that it looks 10 times better than what we have now. I just want to wish you guys good luck in the application process 😳) I was in the same boat last year at this time. I too am a PA resident, and I would not want to be anywhere else. Any questions or thoughts, let me know. Hope to see everyone in the Fall

Carol,
I could ask a ton of questions but Ill try to limit myself to important ones 🙂
When did you hear from Penn last year about interviews, etc and what was the interview like? How are your classes? I dont know if you are a LA person, but do you find yourself commuting to Kennet Square very often?
Anything that you would consider need to know info, or anything interesting and/or exciting would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your insight!

Hey Deanna,
I heard last year in July because I was waitlised. I was on top of the waitlist, but it takes a long time to move (especially since I was a PA resident), I got into other schools (however and found out rather early). The interview was extremely laid back. Very casual conversation. Mine started off like, "So tell me about yourself".... On the interveiw day you go into a classroom for orientation (for a few hours and collect your packets with your name on it--> it has all types of useful info.) Next you go on a tour of penn, then you eat lunch and the interviews are next. I believe they run from 1-4. Just so everyone here knows, ask questions during the intereview (act interested, they like that), and remember that the students showing you around have a say of whether you get in or not)--So make a good first impression. Also, despite what you hear... Later on that night, on the day of the interview you should receive a phone call if you are accepted. If you do not receive a phone call that night you are either, waitlisted, put on hold, or declined for admission. (This is just for you info.) Also, you can hear as early as December if you are invited for an interview and as late as March I believe. I think that the early ones are for PA residents then later on they do the out of state invites. Classes, so far are good. Lot of them. We have Anatomy, histology, develop. bio., intro. to clinical vet. med, biochem, and wildlife (elective). So far to date I had 7 tests, I have 9 more to take before the end of the semester. So, it is a lot of work. Also, it seems like there are labs for everything. We have a biochem lab (about 5), anatomy lab, Intro. to clinical vet med lab (about 4 or5), histology lab, and develop Bio. lab. (4 labs). I have been to New Bolton a few times for intro. to clinical vet med lab. You go (have to find your own ride) to do a bovine physical, equine physical, equine ultrasound, bovine diagnostics, llama and pig PE (I think that is it) so far for this year. However, I love it here. It is great the people are great, the teachers are great, the area is great. The classes seem to overlap (meaning learning the same things in each class)--> but it is different aspects of it--> and it helps to keep reiterating the same information and really helps to drill the concept into your head. I would continue with all the things I want to say (I could go on and on)--about teachers, tests, the schedule... But I have to go to histology class, then lab and then I am done. Any other questions you may have keep them coming. I would have loved for someone to tell me more info. about penn and what to expect, and the interview process. Good luck during the application process.

Hi Carol,

When did you receive an interview invitation? I was just curious because I am an in-state applicant as well. How were your GRE scores? Mine are almost exactly the same as the average they post on the site, slightly higher. What kind of experience did you have?

Thanks,
Tracy

I would apply to Auburn, VT, and UGA. Possibly Tennessee and NC state.

although auburn has clearly demonstrated its superiority over UGA this saturday 😛

Carol,
Thanks so much for the reply and all the useful info 🙂 Just wondering, how does it work if you accept somewhere else and then go to another school off the waitlist? Do you just lose your deposit at the first? Where were you going to go until Penn called?

Thanks!

I did this 😳 . I paid the deposit, found a house and was going to sign the lease, financial aid papers went through, when I found it was capped at 18900 which was the tuition I would have paid as an out of stater. So I was going to look for a job and was pulled off the waitlist at 3 other schools and so I accepted and paid the deposit to one, lost the deposit for the one I was originally going to go to. I sent them an official letter explaining my situation and thanking them for the oppertunity to attend but asked that they gave my position to someone on their waitlist. They contacted me to say the understood and thanked me for applying.

it seems to me that a lot of colleges are located in not-so-great neighborhoods, but i feel that penn's campus is pretty safe (i go to drexel which is directly next to it). they have security that can drive or walk you to any place on campus if you don't feel safe, and i feel that most parts are pretty well lit. i really like west philadelphia itself, and i believe that it's just a matter of being smart, as in any place you would be. obviously, there's some bad parts, but i always try to walk with someone else at night, etc... there are some really beautiful spots in west philadelphia, old houses, trees...so i wouldn't let it deter you from going to penn. you can always live in a surrounding neighborhood in the city, it's a very bikeable place (although the public transportation leaves a lot to be desired...)

I applied to Auburn, UT and of course UGA.

I'm not set on getting in this year as my stats really aren't that great. But I will never know if I don't try so here it goes!

Hey,
Sorry for not writing back early, I have been busy with a lot of things. I received my interview invite in Dec. 22 or 23rd I believe, a few days before X-Mas ( I was soo excited, I have to say it made my holidays)--because I did not think I would get an interview at all. I was the first group of interveiws offered at Penn and I believe the interview was like JAn.15th or so. It was on a Friday (I believe it is always scheduled on a Friday) right before heading back from Winter break--I started back at school that Tues. My GRE scores were average (according to Penn)--> nothing amazing. For experience, I worked at an animal hospital for 3 and 1/2 years doing tech work. I did research at 2 different labs, did projects, volunteered at a local animal shelter. Quite frankly, I am blanking on what else I did. But I believe I did a few other things as well (this is how tired I am , that is sad). To other people, who commented: I was going to Ohio State and then I got called to go to Penn. Yes, I lost my deposit for Ohio (it was like $350 or so, I can not remember exactly), then in order to accept Penn I had to pay a $500 for a desposit--it was a lot of money considering I lost 300 for the Ohio desposit. Also, I lost money for an apartment--yet they did give me some of that back (which was great). On another note, West Phila, is not a good area itself, yet it is nice where Penn's campus is located. However, do not get a false sense of security because things can still happen. I volunteered at U of Penn small animal hospital (another thing I did, which I just remembered now) and right outside of the hospital someone got mugged in broad daylight. So, just keep your eyes and ears alert and you will be good. Also, do not stay out late when no one is around Ex.) like midnight or 1am on a Wed. night--> cause no one will be around, however, being out that late on a Fri night is totally different , there are a lot of people around. Penn spends a few hours during orientation about campus saftey and there are upfront with you on the number of robberies, rapes etc.. reported at Penn. So, just be smart about decisions you make, and you will be ok. Any other questions I will be happy to answer, again--> GOOD LUCK EVERYONE 😳)

everything pales in comparison to UGA 👍 😍 😛 😀

but hell, I am biast to that because I am a GA resident.....

I am applying to CSU, Wisconsin, Minnesota, MSU, NC State, Penn, and Iowa State. I also applied to UC Davis, but got rejected just the other day. And a Merry Christmas to them too!

Thanks for taking the time to share all the info Carol. Especially since it sounds like you are very busy!!

I have applied to Virginia, Georgia, Tufts, Colorado, Auburn, Purdue, Wisconsin and Kansas. I know it's a lot, but my Dad offered to pay the application fees because I was definitely limited by my own bank account!

Hell ya, I am a GA resident too and worked at the vet school for 2 summers in the LAM dept. Just a little partial 🙂 Love the folks I worked with, great group of clinicians and researchers. They all work together very well (no big egos!)

Where did you go for undergrad?

Hey everyone! Sorry to hear UCD is being a scrooge to everyone; I'm a CA resident, so they're probably my best hope for getting in. Just started taking a peek at this forum and thought I'd add my two cents: I've applied to Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Auburn, VA-MD, Tufts, Penn, Colorado State and Washington State.

Sooooo, the count is 1 for 3 - 33%, just like the overall chances of getting into vet school....
I was accepted yesterday at Edinburgh (into the 4 year accelerated program), rejected the day before from UC Davis and rejected today from Virginia Tech. Woohoo! :scared: I am a 32 yo postbacc former journalist, married, NY resident (the transit strike has been a ball, let me tell you) and hocked myself into debt to fulfill my pre-vet courses and apply to an exhausting number of schools because I want to start this fall. I don't have the stomach to go through the agony of applying again. So, here's my list of places I applied: Cornell (top choice), Penn, Tufts, Ohio, Minnesota, Michigan,Guelph, PEI, Edinburgh 👍 , Tennessee, Louisiana, Virginia Tech 👎 , Wisconsin (but I forgot to change the "LSU" from the essay I cut and paste, so I don't think that's happening  ), Florida, Colorado, Washington State, Davis 👎, Illinois, Auburn and Oregon State (where I went to high school- I was "invited/unofficially urged" to fly out to have an "un-interview" and meet the director of admissions -which I did- to strengthen my chances of being among the 1.5% of out-of-staters accepted and stand out since they don't interview at-large applicants).
I know. Oodles. It's funny how, no matter what your credentials and maturity, you still feel like an insignificant grunt who is totally unworthy and sub-par during this waiting game. I went to Harvard, have GREs high enough so I can start teaching for Kaplan again, and here I am getting skinny letters and stressing over whether I should have spent more time shoveling cow poop or learning how to hold snakes.
Thanks for letting me vent.
Merry Christmas and good luck to everyone out there.

Nutella girl, sorry about VTech. Don't worry, you'll definitely get in somewhere in the US I'm sure. Though living in Scotland wouldn't be too shabby! Like you, this is a career change for me. I'm 30 years old and up until a year and a half ago I was a software developer. I am now part time programmer, full time vet tech. It is agonizing the lengths we go through to get into school isn't it? I went to Duke undergrad and am kicking myself for not sucking it up and fulfilling those pre-reqs while I was there. Oh well. Let us know what you hear!

Hi Guys/Gals,

Another non-trad here...

I just enrolled for my first set of pre-recs at the local U (NSU). Chem 1 (a re-take for me, my last chem is 20 years old) and Bio 1 (never took it).

It was different that what I remember...my last two schools were a cacophony of administrative confusion. But NSU made applying, enrolling and getting setup a snap. Maybe I just knew the required hoops or the right questions to ask this time around.

I've been through school twice now (a BS and an MS), and I was doing great this time, and was really was sure of myself...until I went to the bookstore to get my new texts...I took one look at them and said "WTF AM I THINKING GOING BACK TO SCHOOL?". Funny thing was I didn't even realize I had said that out loud until I saw the 18 YO next to me throw me a look  .

Then I got the bill for the books...well, somethings never change...inflation has been busy 🙁

U of F, here I come...

Best,
Oldie

Oldie,
Good luck with chem and bio. I found them much easier the second time around. Maybe because I'm more mature and my time management skills are better. Who knows really. Have you tried half.com or Ebay to buy your texts? I've found some pretty good prices on those websites.
Good luck!

I guess I'm kind of jumping on this thread late; I just discovered this forum. It's so nice to be able to read about what everyone else is doing! Best of luck to you all. My bf is a 2nd-year vet student at Davis, so while he's very empathetic to the stress I'm going through, it's not the same as hearing from other people who are going through it at the same time!

I applied to Davis, my in-state and in fact in-city school (I went there for my undergrad and have been working at a lab associated with the UCD School of Medicine)--far and away my top choice, since they have such a great research program, which is what I'm most interested in, and so I would not have to leave my bf (almost 5 years now, so we are practically married 🙂 Unfortunately their fees are not much different from going out-of-state, so that's not really a factor...

I also applied to Colorado--my second choice, Kansas--just interviewed there last weekend and should be hearing from them soon, Ohio, Penn, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. Haven't heard from the last five, other than "we've received all your materials/please give us more $$". Have heard some odd things about Michigan--like that they admitted a class of all women. Can anyone confirm this??? 'Cause there must be something screwy with their admissions policies if only women are getting in (and I'm a woman)--weren't there ANY qualified males?

Would've liked to apply to Washington, but I decided to apply this year instead of waiting until next year in August, so I was taking the GRE at the last possible moment and they wouldn't accept an emailed score or my MCAT score. Oh well! As a CA resident, I probably wouldn't have gotten in anyway ;-) Was fairly limited on what schools I could apply to, having taken 2 quarters of o-chem instead of a whole year (long story, don't ask).

Well, I like to think I'm qualified, one thing I'm very certain of is that I'm male, and I received a letter of admission to the class of 2010 to Michigan State. I'm really curious to see where that rumor started....

On another note, when did you turn in your VMCAS application? The ones who interviewed in early December sent their apps in well before the due date. The director of admissions said then that the remainder of the applicants who qualify (I think another 100 or so, but don't quote me on that) are going to be interviewed in February.

Rumor...This rumor was about the class of '07 but is not true (I was accepted into this class, but am not there)

I was part of the first tier of applicants. I was notified about the interview in late November, which was scheduled for the 8th of December. I think I heard back before Christmas, but because I was out of town I didn't get the UPS 2-day envelope until right before New Year's. I'm not sure when they'll notify the second tier of applicants, but Hilda (the director of admissions) said that they would be interviewing again in February.... Best of luck to your friend!

Hey Snowyegret,

Congratulations on getting in. I think you and I interviewed the same day at MSU. I also got an offer of admission via the 2nd day air UPS package. Have you heard anything from other schools?

Hey Pennbound,
Just out of curiosity, what were your comparison notes for Cornell versus Tufts versus Penn, and what were the 👎 things about Cornell and Tufts? I've been accepted into Cornell, and have a pending interview at Tufts (waiting to hear from Penn), and have yet to decide if it is worth my while to go to the Tufts interview....

My reasons for not applying to Cornell and Tufts are personal ones. It is hard to explain the fact that it just feels as though it would not be the right fit. I have worked with Penn grads, Cornell grads, and a Tufts grad - all wonderful doctors.
Just some personal cons:
Cornell
- does not do interviews. They are willing to give a spot to someone whom they have never met. That is just one of many little things. However, a friend of mine is a recent graduate of Cornell. She is extremely satisfied with her education and she is a phenomenal doctor. Cornell is a great school, just not for me. Also, my husband builds websites and is a city man. Ithica is beautiful but it would be difficult for him to find a job there.
Tufts
I have only heard a few good things about Tufts. Clients seem to have nothing but complaints. The one graduate I know went there to become a vet - not because it was "Tufts". If you have a choice of Cornell or Tufts, I would choose Cornell, but that is just me. Every school is a little different, a good thing because there are many different types of applicants. Some are just looking to attend vet school while others are looking for a particular curriculum.

Penn is the perfect fit for me and I am at a point in my life where I do not want to settle. I have placed all my eggs in on basket but if it is meant to be it will happen. If it does not happen I have a back up degree and will probably go for my Master's in Public Health to find my way back to the veterinary field.

Congrats on getting it Cornell!

Congrats to you to Bluejay! The only other reply I've received is from VA Tech, which was a rejection. Not too surprised with that one, nor too disappointed. I interviewed at K-State a little while back, and I just received an invitation to interview from Minnesota. I am also waiting on CSU, WSU, Davis, and Oregon. I feel like the interview in Kansas went pretty well, but you know how it is - hard to say for sure. Does Colorado interview out of state students?
I don't have high hopes for Davis; it would appear that they don't accept very many out of staters.
Good luck to you!

Bluejay--Colorado does not interview out-of-staters. As far as I know Colorado anticipates giving everyone a yes or no response by the end of January. Good luck!

Really?! Even for non-Colorado/WICHE applicants?!

That would be great, but I'm not holding my breath...

The CSUCVM website (like the websites for the other schools I've applied to) is oh-so-informative, too. Davis still has the same Application Updates message ("Due to the large volume of supporting application materials received...") they had on October 4!

Thanks for the thorough answer, Pennbound! It certainly helps since I was more swayed towards Cornell anyways....
And best of luck with UPenn!

I am also waiting for colorado to respond. But, I think my chances are slim coz so many people seemed to have applied there.

Just wanted to add something about U Penn.. i find that they were rather money minded.. when i wrote to enquire about some stuff.. the first thing she did was to tell me about the cost of their school fees hinting that i better be able to afford it or else not apply.

Just my views..hope i don't offend anyone.

The info. about CSU is just what they said in their email from awhile ago (I'm out-of-state too)...hopefully they'll stick to their own timeline! But you're right, who knows how long it will really take.
