I am applying in June and am currently working on my personal statement. The advice I see is to have several people look at it, but who? The dentists I know are great, but since they each gave me a LOR, I hate to ask them for something else (since I want to go back and shadow - thus asking for even more).

Should I find a professional service, or can someone here point me in the right direction of who would be a GREAT person to review my PS. I don't think some random friend reading it would be helpful, or am I wrong?

Thanks!

For my PS, I had my sister read it, and a bunch of friends. They helped catch any grammar mistakes and help with my wording, and a little bit for the content too. As stated above, your university's writing center is a great place to start. There's also usually a thread made a few months before the cycle opens which has a list of SDN members that are willing to read PS's. Just be careful you don't send it to someone who is applying this cycle with you/applying in the future (not to say people are out to copy you, but better safe than sorry!).

On that last note, I can take a look at it for you if you'd like.

I would only use your university’s writing center after you’ve had it read through by your university’s health professions advisor. I say this because I believe the health professions advisor will help you in perfecting the actual “meat” of your PS, while the writing center will help with editing out wordy sentences, grammar issues, etc.

As mentioned above, there are several people on this forum that are willing to read your PS as well. Try to see if an actual dentist that uses these forums would be interested in reading it.

I bounced mine off of a friend who has an honors english degree, friends who have been successful med/dental school applicants, and a few people from SDN. Put some time into it, make honest revisions, and you should be set.

I'm also happy to review personal statements.

Health professions advisor is a good resource that I wouldn't have thought of! For my PS, I had my brother and my sister read it and another random friend lol. I would definitely recommend having 2-3 people look at it because each person offers a different perspective and catches things that the other person might not have caught.

If you would like I can take a look at it.
