Just out of curiosity, was it like UG where you live/lived in the school dorms (and if so, did you have room mates?). Or did you rent out studios/apartments/houses? Did your school help you in finding them or were you on your own? Thanks

Depends on the school in question. I'll be living in Northwestern's graduate housing dorms. Most live there for the first year but then find their own place for second year. Everyone gets their own rooms and bathrooms but it is dormstyle with the food being served downstairs in the cafeteria. A significant portion of our first year class takes this option. However, there are quite a few who find housing on their own for their first year.

I'd say across the nation the vast majority find their own housing(ie don't do the dorm stuff). Most schools also have lists of common apt complexes that students live in and also a list of who needs roommates for the upcoming year.

I lived in Rush's campus housing the first year. Not too bad, there are about 12 apts per building, 6 buildings per court, and 3 courts, all withing walking distance to Rush. Most people live in studios or one bedrooms if they live alone, 2 bedroom apts if they have a roomate. I lived with my girlfriend, so we had a one bedroom. It was a regular apt - about 650 square feet, bedroom, bathroom, living/dining room, and a free parking space for $806/month. Rent was taken right out of my loan on a quarterly basis. The best reasons for doing so during first year were that I could go into anatomy lab or go use my microscope for histo any time I wanted. I was on a night schedule for most of last year, so I would often be in anatomy lab at 10pm or so. It was pretty convenient being able to walk just a couple blocks and not have to deal with driving there. The negative aspect is that the apartments are not really that nice, especially if you have a non-student living with you. The appliances are old and crappy and our apartment was a garden apartment with no security bars or anything.

Now that I'm starting second year, however, I have much less of a need to be at school at odd times. We moved to a lakefront highrise apartment for $1100 a month (+$165 for parking). MUCH nicer with a view of the entirety of Lake Michigan and almost all of the south side of Chicago, secured parking space, 24 hr security, NEW appliances  etc.

Once you learn how you will be studying (look at some of the threads around here - everyone studies differently), if you find you study mostly at home and skip a lot of class, I HIGHLY recommend finding a nice apartment for second year. If you're going to be at home the majority of your day, you might as well be in a really nice environment. For first year, however, I recommend staying close to school, whether that means campus housing or an off-campus apartment nearby.

At my school, people find apartments/houses on their own, but the school maintains a list of available places in the area. They will also give you advice on which areas to avoid, and try to pair you up with other people looking.

When I got here last year, I was surprised to find that a few people had actually bought houses in the neighborhood around the school for their four years. Since housing is so cheap around here (under 100k), it is a great option to consider, if one has the the money in the bank (or parents willing to help out). Once the deposit is paid (the main hurdle) and the mortgage approved(the other hurdle), it can save a lot of money in the long run.

I wound up buying a house at the end of my first year, and found a couple of roommates who take care of a good portion of the monthly payments (mortgage, taxes, etc). I am hoping to make a little on the house when I sell in a few years, and after the rent saving, principle paid while in school and the money from the sale, I hope to have paid off at least one year of med school. True, I am now a landlord, as well as being a med student, but it is a pretty easy job to have while in school. I also get to live in a house rather than an apartment, and know that I dont have to live the transient student lifestyle while I am here. Of course, at most schools, this isn't an option, but something to consider in less expensive areas of the country...

There is no campus housing at OHSU. (Not that I would live in it if there was... I got more than my fill of communal living my freshman year of college...) I live in a craphole apartment so close to the med school that I can literally stand out on my deck and hit the basic sciences building with a baseball. I get out of bed about 10 minutes before lecture starts.

in a van! down by the river!

There's no student housing at Temple Med (for um, pretty obvious reasons). 😛 But apartment prices, while not cheap aren't too outrageous in Philly and there are certain complexes that house a significant number of both med and dental students.

I'm in one of the University of Minnesota's Family Housing cooperatives with my wife, and couldn't be happier.

Since I have no idea what the "C" building is, I'm not sure that I do. 😀

(I'm sort of "behind" the Pantry, I suppose you could say, but that'd be a stretch.)

heh, u know how there is that crappy apt building with briars around it directly behind plaid pantry, it has a big white "C" painted on the back. Some students live there..most of the younger students live in the dumps around 11th street tho.

I never noticed the "C" before! I'll have to check it out next time I walk by. If I'm thinking of the same place you are, it has this bearded hippie guy living there who always sits right outside his door and yells greetings at everybody who passes by.
