Just a question or two. I am a USIMG from St. Georges with A/B grades, 233/95 on Step 1 and sitting for Step 2 in a few weeks. I have read the anesthesia FAQ and it was wonderfully helpful. How competitive is this and can I realistically have a shot at "upper tier" places or am I around the area of middle range programs? Also being from Chi-town originally, are UIC, Rush, Loyola or ILL Masonic realistic possibilities?

I'm a Ross graduate, having matched at IL Masonic for anesthesia. I recommend you apply here. Not a well known program, but this past year's graduating class all received great jobs nonetheless. The chairman is very well-known in anesthesia circles, having written textbooks in the field. A resident last year had the 3rd highest in-service exam score in the entire country. The residents here are extremely happy. Non-malignant attending attitudes, benign work hours and call schedule. The hospital itself is in the coolest part of Chicago, Lincoln Park. Nice facilities.....if you have any more questions, you can PM me!

DrLee,

hi Im a fourth year considering anesthesia. For a long time now, i was determined to go into radiology but now im am seriously doubting radiology. I have always had a strong interests in anesthesia and now i feel that anesthesia is truly the specialty for me. I want to be sure before i send in my ERAS application soon. What i was hoping was that you can provide me some info about what it is about anesthesia that you like. Can you please talk about you what specifically about anesthesia you like and dislike, your lifestyle outside the hospital, what type of things you do as an anesthesiologist, etc etc. any pros and cons will be much appreciated. THank you so much for your time.

So are you "considering anesthesia," or is it "truly the specialty for [you]?"
Have you been "determined to go into radiology. . . for a long time now," or have you "always had strong interests in anesthesia?"

Sorry, just bustin' your balls a bit. 🙂 Anyhow, good luck to you in this year's match, hope you get what you're lookin for.

Sdboy,

You can do a search on this forum to find quick answers to your questions. My personal reasons for going into anesthesia are: 1) the acute care aspect of anesthesia as opposed to the chronic management of internal med, 2) I love clinical physiology, 3) I like to focus on one patient at a time (translation: no rounding!), 4) no dealing with compliance and social issues prevalent in other specialties, 5) I love the great responsibility required in the field...If I'm going to wake up at 5-6am every morning, I better have a good reason for it!, 6) I love the procedural aspect of anesthesia, 7) After you place the patient into the PACU, there's no follow-up! Which means you can turn off your stupid pager once you leave the hospital! 8) Last, but not least, the lifestyle aspect of the field, of course. Is it not surprising to see anesthesiologists as the happiest, most laid-back docs in the hospital??

Your step one score should put you in contention for interviews pretty much everywhere. Its hard to predict which people will select IMGs though. I'm sure you'll get a sweet spot somewhere.
