My third year is almost done. Still not sure what I'm going to do. I like the cognitive aspect of medicine but I also like visual stuff such as optho and rads. Currently, I have managed to rack up a good amount of PRE-clinical honors and step 1 of mid-240s, but my string of tough evaluators for third year is getting on my nerves 😕 😡 . I get feedback as if I'm outstanding, but my grade ends up being only an advanced/high pass (guess better than just pass). Clinical comments are good, but I wonder how badly the letter grades are hurting my chances at rads (or even optho). Any suggestions from people in the same boat? Or people who have been there? Plus, anybody work with good rad attendings during away rotations? If so, where? I plan on at least doing one if I go forward with this.

I think your stats are solid for the most part. As stated numerous times on auntminnie...there are a lot of spots in rads availible--~1,000 if your willing to be flexible with location and prestige. I am in fact similar to you with respect to Step 1, but am getting my ass handed to me this year clinically with all P's and pretty mediocre/run of the mill evaluations. I feel that coming from a strong school with a good step 1, solid research and a few strong letters--I'm bound to match--maybe at community, but I feel like I should still match. I suggest you first decide if you are interested in rads or optho--then start considering where/when to do away rotations. Rads is a pretty small field, so I think that getting to know people that know people in the places your interested in is a good start. This should help you decide how to go about doing away rotations. Call up the rads advisor/contact at your school and ask how he/she can get you in touch with the people to get you connected. Remember, its who you know =)

You're definitely strong for middle tier academic programs. Seemed like quite a few people this year with good board scores but completely mediocre clinical grades got plenty of interviews.

If you get involved in some research and are able to present at a conference, you'll probably be strong for top tier programs as well.
