What do you guys think they want to hear as a response to these questions? As far as I know, in five years, I will just be graduating from medical school...so I would be applying for a residency. But this doesn't strike me as a "good answer" to this question. And the same goes for the "ten years" question. If I'm a neuro resident, I will still be in training.

What are they getting at guys? Thanks...

I usually answer with the general direction I see my career heading. Although I'm uncertain as to which specialty I'd like to pursue, I am currently interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine. I would like patient care to be at the focus of my efforts, but I would also like to pursue education and be involved with research as well.

Just tell them you'll be riding on 22s and rolling on dubs 😎 laid back... with your mind on your money and your money on your mind.

But no seriously, I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to that question. According to my interview coach, the question is more of a way to assess your maturity level thus to see if you have a realistic view on the medical career.

The time horizon is too short for medicine, I doubt you will hear that question. 5 years from now (if you are in college), you will perhaps starting residency. 10 years from now you will potentially still be in residency, or maybe a fellowship. So it's silly to even ask a question like that that isn't 15+ years. I never encountered such a question.

I was asked the 10 year question at Loyola. The first thing I said was that I see myself settling back in Southern California. THen i just talked about different career paths that interst me right now, and others that might after i have been exposed to everything during med school.
