Out of curiosity, where do most of the SDNers cram in their hours of mindless studying 😀? For example, library, your house (if so, where.. bedrooms, room for an office, living room), coffee place, BN, etc.

For me it was a mix of places, I tend to change locations every few hours to keep things fresh during a cram session. My faves while studying alone were Starbucks, in my living room with a hockey game on, or if I felt unfocused I would just lock myself up in the quiet room of the univ. library.

I'm a person of habit so its been at the library after lectures. At the desk at my apartment.

If the weather's nice, I study outside as much as I can. Otherwise, our school has a med student-only study room that I usually study in. Sometimes I go to Panara, cause they give free refills.

I pretty much never study at home; maybe, if I'm really swamped, I'll look over my notes in front of the tv or something.

Is there a reason?

I study on the crapper. Best place to concentrate

I don't focus very well at home. If I only have an hour or two of work, I can do it. I study at school most of the time, either in the library or in other designated study areas. About once a week I'll study at panera or another coffee shop for a little break from school.

If it's more than 24 hours before an exam, I usually go to restaurants, (low-key) bars, public parks, or fountains to study. The excess noise is relaxing to me.

If I have one day or less to study, I stay at home, in my bedroom, and study there.

I usually study at home but past experiences in undergrad have led me to believe that won't be the best place for me to study in med school. I tend to get distracted by tv and if I am too close to a bed I end up falling asleep and nothing gets done. I plan on studying in the library at least 4 days a week if i can.

.Ooo... Hockey games... I am an ice skating coach and have a hockey playing boyfriend. Needless to say, I end up sending huge amounts of time at the ice rink. I end up studying with the sound of hockey pucks hitting the side boards or routine music playing over and over again.

When I am not in the rink I tend to study on my bed in front of the TV. I find the background noise to help me not freak out over how much I have to study...

Cafe's are also a good place to study, but since I am studying in Ecuador there really isn't a "cafe culture"... They recently opened a chain called Juan Valdez that carries Colombian coffee. I have studied there a few times and it has worked out pretty well.
.🙂

If I have to go to campus, I study in a basement study area with cubicles the medical school has. If not, my home office is very conducive to study. (but it has a pool table and an arcade basketball shoot out right outside my office door which can be problematic)

I don't think I'd ever leave home...

If I have to hang around school for a bit, which is becoming more frequent with rotations, I'll study in the library or something. Optimally, though, I'll study in my bedroom with my radio playing.

The radio doesn't distract you??

It's not really a where question for me. I have a small tablet PC and I just downloaded a notecard app for my android phone, so I can access my electronic "notecards" whereever I am. So far, I've studied on public transportation, in my house, at the school library, and even while waiting at a bar for friends to arrive.

By the way, anyone with an app-friendly phone. Download a notecard app. If I pass med school, I'll have it to thank - I think.

The question is... when will I find time between all of the classes, fluff curricula, and going out to study enough? (M1 here)

Did your classes already start?

I usually study at home- usually either at my desk in the study or on my bed. I really like TV in the background so I tend to be in the bedroom since I don't have a TV in the study.

Oh and sometimes I group study and we rotate apartments.

My favorite places to study were:
  • Starbucks Coffee Shop
  • Panera Bread
  • The end of the runway at National Airport
  • The East Wing of the National Gallery
  • Dome of the Library
  • National Library of Medicine
  • Empty classroom at school

I never studied at home. Home was my sanctuary of relaxation and I didn't pollute it with study materials. 😉 Now, I have a den in my home, an office at school and in my lab. I still don't study at home much outside of the den.

I never understood how people could study at Starbucks. How do you concentrate when someone is yelling "extra skim soy vanilla cappufrappamocha!" every 2 minutes?

For me, anywhere that is people- and electronics-free within a 30-ft radius will do.

I really can't get much effective studying done at home. When I do study at home, I'm mostly lying to myself, and I know I'll end up falling asleep or watching TV.

I haven't started M1 yet, but I've always been a fan of coffee shops (with big enough tables to spread out a little) and noisy sections of school libraries. I need a little noise in the background.

At my desk in my bedroom solving practice problems between waiting in the lobby of my starcraft games or waiting to respawn from Team Fortress 2.

Excluding 3 of them, those sound much cooler than anything I have in Tallahassee.

In undergrad, I loved sitting at my desk solving problems listening to iTunes. I miss it, sometimes.

Now I usually study at my apartment at my desk, with iTunes radio tuned to WGBH or the baroque station. I have to turn off my computer monitor or it's distraction city. Every once in a while I'll study in the hospital library or in our histology lab (in another building that's a decent walk from the main campus, so hardly anyone is there outside of class). I can't study at Starbucks or B&N, way too stimulating for my ADDness.
