You listed one TX program... I would also consider UT Houston, Baylor, UTHSC San Antonio, all favorable IMO.

Go to a west coast residency in the location you want to end up living in. Don't go to bfe michagan - you won't get a calif job and your SO could dump u at any time.

Hi everyone, thanks for taking some time to read/help me out. I am a 4th year applying for anesthesia, really not sure where else to apply. Would really appreciate any help from you guys

First a bit of background:

School: Top 20 (according to US News)
Step 1: 260
3rd year: pretty even mix of honors/high pass
Research: 2 research projects in anesthesia, 1 pub
Class Rank: Top quartile (my school only gives out quartiles)
AOA +

Would be happiest on the West Coast or at U Mich. I am from CA originally and my significant other is at U Mich for another couple years.

Currently list includes -

U Michigan
Stanford
UCSF
UCLA
UCSD
UC Irvine
UC Davis
UW
UT Southwestern

I don't feel like I'd really be happy on the East coast, but do feel kind of weird leaving off so many great programs. Any thoughts? Anywhere else I should take a good look at?

Why not add Virginia Mason in Seattle to the mix? Seattle is a wonderful town. VM is a great residency with plenty of big cases - you get the UW trauma experience at Harbor View, and it is a private practice hospital so surgeons are fast, attendings are happy and treat each other well, the only other residency is Surgery which produces a great bunch of physicians as well.

Also, as I have mentioned before, free food should be at the top of the list - and VM has it.

So does UCSD by the way - at least they used to.

I should add to about VM - although I am not sure how this translates to good training, but I will say that it does speak to the quality of the staff there - as far as their belief in resident training and promoting high quality anesthesia colleagues - that they have about 8 or so attendings that are (or were) oral board examiners. I think that is pretty phenomenal really.

I was impressed by OHSU when I interviewed. Portland is a great city. What about programs in AZ, UT, NM, CO?

I understand that groups hire mostly regionally due to familiarity of the grads from certain programs, but do you guys think that Michigan has a good enough reputation that I would be able to work out west when residency is over? Wouldn't really want to stay out in the midwest long-term

When I interviewed at michigan, the map of where their graduates went spanned the US. Since its such a big program, their grads go everywhere. I don't really think Ann Arbor is BFE, it's right next to detroit, not that far from chicago or cleveland if you need some things that big cities can afford (like muggings, operas, etc.)

Assuming you are a half-personable human, apply where you want to live - you'll probably get to go there. You've just described an ideal application for the remaining 99% of us who are mediocre to good applicants. Best of luck (though I don't believe you'll need it).
