Planning on re-applying to MD – this last year was a bust with a late application (and essays I think should have been better).
  • Undergraduate Major: Math
  • cGPA: 3.4/ sGPA: 3.4
  • MCAT Score(s): 519 (as a retake - original was 509)
  • Research Experience: 5,000+ hours
  • Publications/Abstracts/Posters: 6 so far - all presented at national conferences - ranging from 5th to 1st authors on these
  • Clinical Experience (paid or volunteer): 200+ hours clinical volunteering
  • Physician Shadowing: 200+ hours of shadowing
  • Non-Clinical Volunteering: 1500+ hours
  • Other ECs: D3 varsity sports in college for 3 years.
Any thoughts on next steps - and schools outside of my home state?

I'm concerned about I my research-emphasis background (is it too research heavy given my GPA?) - but would love to continue research as well going forward.. Consider MD/PHD or MD/MS instead?
Any rising GPA trends?

GPAs are too low for MD/PhD

It's very hard to advise a re-app when you applied late. I don't know if you were unsuccessful because your GPA is just too low, or if you applied too late to be considered.

I agree that I don't think you're likely to get love in the MD/PhD realm, though if you truly are interested and if you're at an institution where there is a med school you could see if your PI could reach out on your behalf to see if there is any chance. I think getting an "in" at your own institution is really your best bet if that's really an option.

Otherwise I think you just apply to state schools +low-mid tiers out of state and apply in June/early July. Include a few DO schools. What is your state? What is your current plan for this gap year?

You can't enter MD/PhD with that GPA, so try to get accepted and find out if there's a way once you start medical school. Resrarch is always going to be there, including fellowships through HHMI to work at NIH.
