MSII is underway (1.5 weeks in) and I feel frustrated with the amount of time available to study/review. On one hand I am stuck going to lectures from 8:00~3:00 most days each week and spend the rest of the evenings (including weekends) studying the notes/ppts from classes. On the other hand I have the profs and med school admin telling me that we should be reading Robbins cover to cover while doing First Aid Step I review throughout this year in order to prep for boards. It seems that a lot of people on SDN (taking into account the demographic) manage to review during MSII, but I honestly can't seem to find the time. I am barely able to read the chapters that correlate with the handout packets let alone do Step I prep at the same time to learn the handouts in depth enough for me to be fairly confident taking a block exam (i.e thinking I am at an "A" level). I am talking "balls to the wall" from the time we get out of class till ~11:00 PM each day and there is not enough time. At this rate it seems I will have to study for boards after we get done with mini-boards in the Spring (or let GPA suffer to review MSI and board books...which I don't think is worth it). What gives?

I feel similarly. I'm also trying to write the paper for my research project over the summer... I have no idea how I'm going to find time to do all of this. 😕

I agree. I have no clue where the SDN gunners find the time. Luckily, the school hasn't given us any step 1 talks so hopefully we aren't suppose to yet start studying. In a way studying for each system is like studying for the boards.. so yea... *shrug*

if you need more time start ditching class

- Stop attending classes (unless classes are mandatory then that blows)

- Review whatever you learned/are learning right now in FA/BRS/Goljan

- Set aside at least 1 hour a day to review some material from last year in FA/BRS/Goljan

The secret has been revealed!

As a bonus I've been about 10x happier since I stopped attending lecture.

Out of curiosity.... do those of you who skip class have video recorded lecture, or audio?

My school doesn't video record lectures for us, and I've found that I spend just as much time going over the lecture material myself as I would if I went to lecture.

Most schools have video, audio, or both type of recordings in place.

Yes, you're correct that you are spending just as much time reviewing a lecture on your own. However, you are being more efficient if you review material on your own since you're focused on understanding, and are therefore learning the material at your own pace. In a lecture setting, this is not possible because the professor is explaining concepts rather briefly due to time constraint.

Our lectures are recorded, which is nice because you can speed them up.

Often our note packets are detailed enough where I feel it's not even worth it to listen to the lecture, but I imagine it varies by school if you can get away with that. Even if you spend the same amount of time on it, self-study is FTW because you can spend less time on stuff you find easy and more on what you find difficult.

Our lectures are recorded (audio only), but I don't want to listen to them or it negates the purpose of not going to class. There is always a fear in the back of mind that some key point will be highlighted during lecture as "being on the test" and I am not there to hear it. I guilt myself into listening to the audio and then I am back where I started. :-/ 👎

What I try to do is study myself on the topics lectured on a given day, wait for the recorded video to be posted and watch it in 2x ( surprisingly I can follow along). Then I'll skim over the scribes/transcript for it more as a review and any key info I might have missed

Just about everyone listens to lectures at doublespeed at my school. I had one professor I 3Xed. I had to go to one of his lectures in person due to a quiz... He spoke sooooo sloooowly.

👍

M3/M4s: if you skipped class during M2, did you even bother watching the lecture?

started off watching classes, but I eventually found myself not paying any attention so I stopped. I just switched to reading the notes, which were in most cases more than adequate.

Our school had M3s who had passed tell us what they did. ALL of them waited until a week after classes ended. I really don't believe it is at all necessary- M2 is crazy enough as it is.

I have been sooo much happier since I stopped going to class last year but still listening to all lectures double speed. Then this year I took the leap to not even watch lectures and I am doing much better in school than I was last year even. Moral of the story is, the books are better than the professors because they teach you what you need for Step 1 which is what your classes should be doing. Testing on minutia is pointless I feel just because some professor who teaches is doing research on it feels like testing you about it.
